    Howdy All

Well yesterday I had to replace some of my spot light bulbs on the house and I didn't want to have a "Oh Frack" moment so I backed Matilda out of the garage to get her out of harms way while I got the big ladder out of the garage...

I get all the bulbs changed and say to myself, "hey self, this is the 1st time she's seen daylight since last fall, why don't you take her for a spin"...

I say to myself that that's a good idea... So I start to go and I hear something dragging... I look and I see a bar hanging down from the lower radiator area that is dragging the ground...

    Long story short now...

Isn't that bar suppose to be straight and be pressed against the the back side of the spoiler in the middle of the spoiler???
I think it is suppose to be the spoiler brace, but I haven't been under the car all winter due to health reasons with my wife and myself so I don't recall if that's were it's supposed to be...

Am I correct that that's were it goes???

If so now that I strightened it from it being dragged I have to break out the welder as it snapped the weld at the mounting point as I bent it back, Aaaaaaaaugh ...

    Thanks

    David

    David,
If it's an original front spoiler brace then yes it would attach to the middle of the spoiler.
Original front spoiler braces were a round solid rod with flat stamped areas on the front and back with holes punched in them for the screw and the carriage bolt. The answer to your question is they are not straight. If memory serves me right each flattened area is angled as it comes off the rod.

    Thanks Duane

I thought I was right... I was going by memory from seeing it there...

Yes mine is a rod with a flat section with the mounting hole... There isn't anything on the front spoiler side... It may have broken off and I didn't see it on the ground... I'll take a look, if I don't find it I'll just weld a new piece onto the front of it when I'm fixing the back...

Just reread your answer... Is there supposed to be a hole in the spoiler were that rod bolts to the spoiler??? I'll have to look when I'm repairing it to see if there's a hole on the spoiler...

I'm amazed how much it bent from just driving slow about 30 feet or so on a dirt driveway...

I'll just add another thing to the "to do list"... I've got alot of catching up to do... I didn't get any of my "winter down time work" done so I've got to get working

    Thanks

    David,
The hole in the back was for mounting the bar to the core support. The hole in the front flat spot was for a carriage bolt. At the dealership, the original front spoilers were supposed to be drilled and a carriage bolt was installed so the brace would be attached to the spoiler.

If I remember, and if I can get the pic, I will take a picture of this on my car. It is a 71 GSX with an original front bracket and an original front spoiler. The 71-72 baffles & spoilers mount differently then the 70 cars, but the brace mounts the same so you will get an idea of what I am talking about.

PS. Those brackets broke off all the time. If the carriage bolt got loose and the nut fell off, then the bracket often caught on the ground and snapped off. I have seen quite a few original cars where the only thing left is the flat spot of the rod bolted to the bottom of the core support.
