Hey Guys, Quick note on my combo and history before I post what happened today, look at auto-sig for combo details. Long story short, this build is now 3+~ years old and I have put at least 3k miles on it around town, I drive it as often as possible and living in CA I get to enjoy it year round. Once I dialed in the timing, carb, mixture, idle, etc.... 3+~ years ago, I literally have not touched it since or had to do any fine tuning.... not once in 3+ years....:TU: Yesterday I changed the oil and filter, use brad penn and drove it to the store and gym, ran like it always has, perfect. Today I drive it, since it was 78 degrees and a perfect day, it ran perfect as always until I had to make a hard stop and when I did it died. This has happened a couple times before and I know its not out of the ordinary, but the other times I simply fired it back up, got it past the flooding symptoms and it was back to normal, the end. Today after that hard stop when it died, it did start right back up. But it died 2-3 more time over the next 5-10 minutes no matter what I did or how I drove it, it did this when coming to a stop or slowing down off the throttle.... an easy stop, slow. I rev'd it in N, I got on it in D and as long as I was accelerating and driving it was fine, but once I slowed down it would try and die. Not everytime.... the symptom was not absolute, it would run prefect and stop fine once, then the next time it would try and die again. Any advice? Bad gas? I did put gas in it prior to this happening.... Thx
sticking needle and seat or float. if you had the luxury i do with no hood on you could take air cleaner off and drive to see if fuel is spewing out when there is no fuel demand.
first easy fix sometimes. start car and cut off fuel supply to carb till it dies. resupply carb with fuel and hope it pushes the tiny piece of dirt or whatever was screwing with it.
I'm with Lonnie, specially since you just filled up. That crappy Ethanol fuel drags water and associated crud with it up to the carb, fuel filter time, possible pull the lid off the carb and suck stuff out. Or just keep it floored and enjoy the smoke show!
Thx guys, first off I'm going to replace the inline fuel filter, its been 3 years.... its time. dumb question, there has to be a filter in the holley carb, its a DP'er.... where's it at? I'm so used to replacing and cleaning the Q-Jet ones, but this is my first DP'er Holley. Thx
there is usually a screen in the inlet fitting but most i see are removed. do you know how to check the float level?
Remember, when you brake hard the fuel is running away from the jets this would seem to be a symptom of low fuel level. Especially true if you are in a dog fight with a chevelle, light to light and then you brake hard you have used use up the fuel on acceleration and then jammed on the brakes. The fuel filter is your starting point as you have already eluded to. Slugger
Mine started flooding one day due to some debris. Might be time for a rebuild? That fixed the issue for me. Mine did not have the screen filters either, but it doesn't matter if you have an inline filter on your system. When you replace your filter, I would go with a higher quality one, like one from RobbMC of Professional Products. You can clean the screens and they filter down pretty small. That might help with preventing debris blockage in the future.
Hey Vince...mark from mh...Not sure you remember me but I bought he center console from you. Anyways, I live in Aptos now and happened upon your prob. Almost sounds like your timing is way too retarded....
Hey Mark... yes, I remember you. The only thing retarded is me....!!!! the timing is fine, I really think its bad gas or needle stuck or filter. I'm heading to the garage this afternoon to check all those things out. Thanks for the note
You have a stuck float or a sinking float, most likely,,, I always install a super heavy duty gas filter on my cars... the kind like Ford put on the big trucks... works better than a little inline filter... also check your throttle dashpot to see if the diaphragm in it has busted.... it should let the throttle close that last little bit s l o w l y......if it does not ,, that can cause a sudden pressure differential that will make the engine flood..... KEEP THE HOLLEY,,,, or if you dont,,, take it off and send it to me,,,, I want all of them I can get.... they are the best carb going for the money,,, next up is webbers, which i cant afford..... ---------- Post added at 07:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:30 AM ----------
