Grocers' prime shelves come at a price

    This stuff has been going on for decades.

    It's like paying the store for advertising...

    I used to sell Swift meats and Butterball turkeys at the wholesale level.

    The grocery store chains are not shy about it. They would tell us right up front that "each flavor" of the new product was $10,000 to get into the warehouse. And if it didn't sell, there was no guarantee they would reorder it.

    Of course Swift was so high and mighty they "didn't pay stocking allowances". Consequently, I never got any new items into any of my stores. Yet my bonus was tied to a certain amount of new product sales. I didn't stay there very long.
