Boring , repetitious work causes more accidents than improper use of a tool.
Get bored ,the mind wanders you loosen your grip unknowingly and bam Pieces Missing. Glad it wasn't worse. After 40 years of sometimes very repetitive and boring work I'm glad to say I only have 6 screws, about 30 stitches and a few tubes of super glue gel used to hold me together.
There have been other injuries but they too happened when I became relaxed with my job at hand.
    Talk to you soon Briz

I agree 100%! That’s my profession, I help prevent workplace accidents and injuries and I agree for sure. Staying focused is the key, but it’s not easy when it’s so repetitive. Taking micro breaks, stretching and staying hydrated helps big time.

I'm sure @Briz didn't expect a dinko screw to be the cause...

Yo Briz...Having done 40+ years of that kinda stuff, I can picture the job at hand (arm??). Wasnt there any chance of taking a small pair of vise grips and unscrewing the broken stubs? With my luck, Id have pre-drilled all the new material only to find a few holes lined up directly on top of the steel remnants. Hmmm. Hafta move a hole diameter over and patch the wood.

My 15 year old front porch has a few raised screw heads. Those shanks are rusted away and if I replace them its a matter of moving over 1/2". The dang snow shovel catches them too!

Not to sound like an ass-hat, but that wasnt a harbor fright wheel was it?

This doesn't compare to Briz's carnage, but I had a wire wheel get caught on the corner of a piece of metal and walked up my arm. The photo doesn't do it justice. It was really ugly. Happened 3 years ago and I still have the scars.

Not even close to Briz's arm either...
A boat I was on started drifting after the anchor pulled out. The current was strong and we were about to crash into another boat. For some dumbass reason I jumped out and stoped them from hitting eachother.
Not even my boat by the way. My arm got pretty messed up. The largest gash is now a 3"x 1/4" scar.

Keep it clean. The risk of infection is much higher with that deep of an injury. The consequences of an infection are much worse to. I was at risk of losing my right leg above the knee from an infection 10 years ago.. that was very scary stuff.

My stitches count is way in the 200s and staples 40+. Only injury pic I have is from snowmobiling a few years ago. I went to start my sled after already riding for a few hours (most snowmobiles are pull-start like a lawnmower, and mine is an 800cc twin with 160 hp so you can imagine the compression, it's not bad but it ain't no lawnmower). When I did I noticed my arm was a little sore. Whatever, kept riding the rest of the day, but every time I went to start, my arm hurt. When we got to the brewery afterward I was already a few in when I pulled my coat off. Looked down and my arm wasn't straight anymore. Grabbed my hand with my other one and pulled and popped it into straightness. Went to Hooters and one of my friends who works there was in nursing school. Had her check the "set" I did and she said it looked and felt like I did a good job. So I left it. Good to this day. This pic is from in the brewery.

Drill bit! that reminds me of drilling through whatever I'm holding in my hand and drilling into my finger / hand. Ya know ya got it good when a little cork screw of skin n meat are on the bit. 1/4" pointy sheet metal screws are great for the also.

Ahhh man I know all to well about drilling those sheet metal screws into my fingers, done it a gazillion times. Also the grinder carnage I'm familiar with as I've had a fair share of "slips" but mostly with a metal cutting disc on so it kinda cauterizes the wound as it cuts:(
