I think there is definitely less space in a 67 wheel well compared to 70-72. I had a set of 285/40/17 on 17x9 wheels with 5.125" BS and I was a good half inch from even clearing the lip of the quarter. They cleared in the 72 by at least an inch.

I figure by sticking with the stock rear I should be able to get away with a 9" wheel on 5.5" to 6.0" of BS. 10" should then need about 6" to 6.5". Measure first of course, I am still green on the whole backspace thing.

Now you have a 71 rear which is just about a half inch wider at each side. So to clear the quarter you will need an extra half inch of backspacing compared to a stock rear.

The next car in this thread will be my 69 GS. My wish list is only limited by $. Taking my brothers advice, popping the body off and working from that.

WTG Troy, you're going to love the way it works. If you have any questions about what I used or how I did things, just ask.

Hey, Joe, is this beast going to be ready for the meet-up in May? I'll be bringing my truck (if I can make it- that's up in the air- I'll know more by mid-April). If you need help hanging those bumpers, let me know. I've done them solo on my old Skylark, and it wasn't fun.

Probably not Steve, I have moved to wood ranch in simi. moved the shop too. been real busy with not time at all for the car, I could possibly get my exhaust done but no where near legal to drive on the streets. maybe next year

Pssh. Just put some turn downs on the headers and drive it like you stole it. Coast when you see the popo. I got my '56 Chevy wagon to the muffler shop uncorked, doing that. So, now you live about 5 miles from me, and in the ritzy section of town, yet! :D

I threw some cheapy bullets and turn downs right off the headers on the green car to get me to an event and cruise around a little bit. It was obnoxiously loud (though everyone thought it was cool, but they weren't riding in it...) But it beat not driving at all!

I guess I could straight pipe it with cheapo mufflers and turn downs to the rear axle. like you said. i'd be driving and I really would like to test this trans.

Do it! I currently have turn downs in front of the axle on green car due to my tank dropping project. I'll get the tails back on eventually, I just wanted to drive it!

The 4l80e in the 68-72 frame is not too hard. After I got the tranny mocked up, I figured out how to put cross member back in.
Step 1, move the tranny out of the way. 2 install factory th400 mount. 3 turn cross member around, bolt the single aligning hole up. 4 mock tranny back in and mark cross member for trimming. 5. Weld in plug for second cross member mounts to bolt too. 20180924_213037.jpg 20180924_213023.jpg 20180924_182300.jpg 20180924_213053.jpg

Driveline mocked again, then the linkages and wiring. I'm not sure what to do with headers. Wrap them or build a heat shield. Gonna have to pull engine to finish frame mods too.

I finally finished my conversion, drives and shifts great with the Quick4 controller and my tranny guy re-programmed it with his specs. He made a few adjustments mostly on the lock up. But it is sure nice not to have to shift it. I had a manual valve body on the 400 before. The converter is a PTC made for my engine combo it is a 9.5" 2800-3000 stall. It is a bear when you stand on it and yet very docile when normal driving. The car is going to BG next week showing it off. Come check it out I will be in the pits vending also (look for the yellow X pro touring look)

I'm going to do this swap in a pontiac. It's recommended to trim bellhousing on passenger side ( where yours is close to header) what dust shield fit, and how was starter clearance ?

Who is the question directed at? Hey Sunset, I don't think the pre 68 floor pan is the same.

    What Pontiac body? Here's a picture of mine on pass side. 15400791924775194157847882647887.jpg 15400792742118490323969406132022.jpg 15400793162434847762868224514423.jpg 1540079349059840325737162048348.jpg 15400793706381036737130254941418.jpg

I got confused. I was looking at your (troy) pics thinking it was mr sunset's.. Either way not picky on who answers. I'm putting one in a 69 lemans but using ram air manifolds. I think it might be tight on that passenger side. Haven't got to mock up starter and block. I guess it still clears bellhousing even though it is on the opposite side than a chevy.
