Guys Every time I wash my car, I am getting water into the trunk. It seems that something is missing to keep the water out? The convertible well liner seems to be like a bag that is catching the water, then overflows and spills the water into the trunk. The water gutter is in place, so what else is supposed to be there that is missing? This is really starting to concern me, as I had completely redone the trunk with new spatter paint, new rubber mat, and spare tire cover, and now I am seeing surface rust under the mat, not to mention that everything in the trunk is getting wet. Suggestions?
I've had to climb in the trunk, with a flashlight, and have someone, starting at the lowest point, run water on the decklid. Just make sure that whomever you have running the water is going to open the trunk when completed.
Water in the well after a rain or car wash? I thought that was factory? And ditch the factory trunk mat. All it does is collect condensation. Or do like I did and put a piece of material in between to lift the rubber off the metal and provide some circulation
Thanks Jerry. I'll make sure and NOT ask my wife to help me with that! ray: So I take it that they all leak water into the trunk? And it's definitely not the trunk lid seal because the well liner is always full of water.
No, they all don't leak water like that. You say washing the car, are you talking about going through a car wash, using a pressure wand to wash it, using a garden hose, or what?
Frank hand wash with a garden hose. I was driving it one day and we had a small amount of rain, and even that got down into the trunk.
Maybe don't drive it in the rain anymore or use water to wash it? That's my plan anyways! I have yet to have a Buick that doesn't leak in the rain or during a wash.
Can you tell if the " water gutter '' overflows or if there are any cracks in it such as were the screw holes are ? Also feel up inside the wheel well at the inside of the lip of the rear quarter. On my driver side there is a drain hole for the gutter or drip rail. Those can get plugged with dirt or someone might have undercoated over the hole. Leaves , pine needles or dirt can collect or even compost and leed to a blockage even in southern cars. I once scooped out enough '' soil '' out of a ragtop to plant a herb garden. lol. Just some thoughts.
I've learned to hand wash my 'Cat. I can't see gaps anywhere, and all the unseen stuff was replaced/reconditioned during the rebuild, but I'd bet it'll leak if given the opportunity. Like I tell the wife: it's an old, 1960's era convertible, so it's gonna leak. Not a matter of time, but a matter of where. Oh yeah, +1 on cleaning the drain holes under the back windows. I used all the stuff I pulled out of mine to back fill my foundation after some rework  Joe
