    I’m “overthinking” AGAIN:mad:
Reading posts, hearing stories, and thinking, what makes a car quick/quicker?
My GS for example, say the engine makes 350/360 horse and low 400 torque, just guessing here, I wanna go 12s, do I make the engine more powerful, and keep my 3.42’s? Go to 4 series gears and some type of overdrive to keep it highway friendly?
I keep thinking of that members car here, don’t remember his name, it’s an older Buick, 455, 3.25 gears IIRC, he’s running STUPID QUICK:eek: with just a low 3 series gear, his engine has to be putting out humongous torque, it’s a 30’s Buick I believe, I wanna say it’s Slim from NZo_O
I’m going to try tuning my combo to TRY and get me into the high 12s WITH my 3.42 gears.
OR I could go 4 series, and BAM I’m there:D
If I were to do that, I’d feel as tho I took the easy way out:rolleyes:
I could gut the interior and MAYBE I’d hit 12s
    NAAAAH ain’t doing that:p
    I’m thinking tuning:cool:

My car has 4.56 gears 32x18.5-15 tires and a 2004R trans. Works great! It runs 2700 rpm at 80 mph.

or just add a 100 shot of nitrous. If you get it tuned on a chassis dyno it’s perfectly safe.

Don't ever forget that any kind of rotating mass eats up HP.

This means you don't need to lift the hood to add performance, just run lighter rims and or tiers, or Aluminum drive shaft.

Also every reduction of 100 lbs in overall vehicle weight will chop 1/10 off of your cars ET .

The bottle was going to be my idea too, depending on how close you are now and if your totally happy with your street manors now. This way your only m as king the power when you want it.

We worked on a friends mustang, bone sti early 90s 5l with 5speed. It came with upper 2 gears.......slow thing ran mid 15s, going to 4.10 only dropped it to 14.8s.......so at least a .5 drop and that's just the time out.

With you already having 3.42 so your alot closer to there so of course you would not ppl lsee near the percentage of gain.

Many of our cars came with 3.64 from the factory.......but speed limits were not near 80mph.

Without OD or crazy tall tires there is a balancing act between gear and driving rpm. Some ppl are more comfortable driving at a higher rpm than others. Some drive farther than others so rpms may become of an important factor.

The early 30s car your referring too I believe is running a large tomahawk motor, so likely over 525 cubes

We swapped out steel wheels for aluminum when we were running upper 12s, we saw 0 et gain

I went 12.05@115 with 3.42s. My 60' was consistently 1.95+ though. It's very hard to launch with a 3.42 gear and a 4 speed. Thats a whole different though.

3.42s are not a great track gear. Especially with a 28" tall tire. Torque converter technology has come along way which helps. A full dress GS is a porky girl. I'd run the shortest tire you can and keep on tuning. Otherwise order the 3.73s or 4.11s

    411 and a 4 speed automatic.

    I got to 13.31 with 373 gear, 28" tire and a 350 automatic 3500 stall.

75-80 shot of nitrous will put it in the 12's easily. 12.30 to be exact with SP3.

    tried and proven.

    no bull from this camp

I've said it before you should already be running 12's. Give me 20 passes or less and I would have that car running 12's for less than $100.

The Super Summit at Norwalk Raceway, (Summit Motorsport Park) will be on June 6 9am-5pm free to get in and run all day.

Then we go to the Autocross half of the track and really shake it out lol.

Sounds more like free for all. Can't imagine you would get much track time with the crowd that will draw. Could be wrong.

Actually that’s what I wanted to do last year, I did super summit a couple years before and I got Lott’s a passes In for free, not a bad wait in the lanes either. MUCH better than a night of TNT at Norwalk:p

It honestly seems like with all the special events that norwalk has that they are wanting to do away with just the normal bracket weekend type guy and host more big guys and special events

They are now only doing 1 Wednesday night a month. They cant say they didnt have enough ppl, last year the double the price to get in and still most nights you were lucky to get 2 or 3 passes as practice.

Sometime it feels like places forget it's the normal ppl that kept them running and helped them build who they are

    Getting off topic though sorry

That's my choice. I have an `87 200-4R GN trans and a 12 bolt with a 4.10 and I wouldn't have it any other way, at least with a small block. I had my trans rebuilt this winter with some HD parts, super servo, etc. added and had my 10" converter re-stalled to 3,600-3,800. Spring isn't going to come soon enough :D And since I've had a spare `87 GN trans sitting around the shop for probably the last 10 years, I had that one rebuilt the same way so I'll have a spare just in case I break one, although in the 15 years I've had it in the car that has never happened. I have 275/60 tires and it will cruise at 70mph on the interstate at 2,400rpm in OD. The best of both worlds.

Nitrous will give you what you want but I have avoided it on my car because I have always felt that once I got that feel from it I would always be disappointed if I got on it without the nitrous. IMO it's best not to get started on it because I just know that once I did I'd always be tempted to go with more and I just don't want to jump on that horse.

WOW I was wondering why I was having a hard time finding WHEN Norwalk was having a TNT night!
    Only 1 night a month huh:rolleyes:

Yeah, nothing like saying piss on the little man.....many new racers get started on Wednesday nights there, a brand new racer starting on Saturday nights there is a tough way to get started given the caliber of racers normally there.

Without a time and place for the next generation to come up it's like chopping off your own foot

Dragway 42 would be the place to go would probably get more runs there and is about 1/2 hr to 40 min. southeast of Norwalk. Probably 1 hr from Cleveland and about 45 min from Akron, plus it is brand new. With that 4 speed and overdrive with lockup flying at 70 would be a piece of cake.

You really can't do much tuning when you can only get 2-3 runs in might get the timing set in that time.

Used to be able to go to D42 and get a lot of runs in on a Wed. night. That was really how I got that nitrous tuned in.

Don't be afraid to add a little juice I have settled in on this 75-80 shot and it is just enough to get to the low 12 at the track and is actually good enough for me for that engine after all it is over 25 years on it now, really could use a rebuild.

42 used to be able to get tons of passes, I love the new layout, but of those ppl that used to go to norwalk on wed now cant, I bet a large number moves and if they do you might not get as many passes there either. But we will see.

I agreed only getting a few passes you cant test much, takes a few to get s baseline just to see where your starting from much less adjust anything
