I currently have a 1961 401 with a 1965 SP400 and was thinking I need an overdrive. I was looking at the 4L60E but than I found the Gear Vendors. The price for each installed is about the same. What would you guys recommend
No contest-G.V I have sold hundreds of used 4l60E's for a reason, they go out often. Plus the modifications you must do to put in that piece of crap. You'll be sorry if you choose the 4l60 John
The 200-4r is a better choice for transmissions, but the gear vendors is really nice. I wish I had one.
GV, all the way. I hear both the 200R and the 4160LE have crappy gear spacing, and you don't want to lose the SP converter.....
I have a 200-4R in my car and I love it. It does cost about $3500 or so for one that's properly built with a converter. I think the GV was a great idea way back when. But with all the modern choices of a 4-6 speed auto trannies, unless you really have to put one in for whatever reason, I'd go with an OD trans. Good luck.
What vehicle is this to fit? I ask as I understand the fit is too tight for a GV in an X frame like the 63-64 Wildcat/Le Sabre. If that is incorrect someone let me know ... please.
Thanks for all the responses. As far as price the GV is less expensive. This would be going in a Chevy 3100 Pickup.
with a 2004r the driveline remains the same length as a powerglide or th350 and you could use the stock shifter if the truck is a auto. the adapter is a must though on the nailhead. you will have to mod the driveline for a gear vendors and the floor may need some clearence work. 2600 would buy a pretty good trans and adapter. since this is going into a truck you have all kinds of options. prob better than either. what is the setup on the 3100 now?
Truck right now had the 401 with the automatic SP400 with a floor shifter with a ford 8.8" rearend goes about 70 at 3000 rpm's on 28" tires gets about 7-8 mpg with the 3 deuce setup on the highway
GV is rated at 1200 HP so you will not break it, an important consideration in a heavy vehicle. I have mine for 9 years now, still works great. I just transferred it from my Switch Pitch to a newly built fixed pitch 400.
i think the legnth of the sp400 is the same as a 4l80e iirc. a built 80e wont break. you could do that and the controller for less money i would think. i know many of the 80s holding 500 hp with nothing done to the things. they are heavy sobs though.
I did the 200r4 trans Does great runs 2200 rpm at 65 mph with it locked up 373 gears 28" tire Ran with nitrous off the line with a 1.61 60ft a bunch of times did ok.
We go on the Power Tour a lot and talking to people there are a lot of them happy with and using the Gear Vendors. These are long trips and many get good mileage. (Not me, my classics don't have overdrive) Thinking about it though.
