Gauge cluster replacement bulbs???

Im replacing the bulbs in my instrument cluster. Getting the right ones for the clock and A/C console are a no-brainer. However, the 12 bulbs on the speedo and fuel/warning cluster seem to be separated into 3 bulb types, numbered on the bulbs themselves as: 168 (2 of them) 161 (3 of them) and 194 (7 of them) They also have corresponding colored twist sockets. Sounds easy.

but...the chassis manual shows the same rating of bulb (the #194) for all of them.

Whats up? Do I get all the same bulb? Different ones? Does anyone care? Will my cluster care?

    Thanks!

I know I've seen specifics on what goes where somewhere--maybe the owners manual?
I didn't follow the instructions and just put them where ever, and I'm planning to go back and do it right--somethings are noticabley brighter/darker than they should be...

the bulb #s refer to brightness & type of socket .

    Bob,

I agree, put the correct bulb in the first time, I also have to replace the #194 in my 71 cluster because I didn't put the correct ones in.

The '71 and '72 Assembly Manuals show the following:

    Indicators:

Headlamp Hi Beam and Directional Signal - 194, 3 used, candle power 2

Oil Pressure and Water Temp. - 168, 2 used, candle power 3

Generator and Brake Warning - 161, 2 used, candle power 1

    Tape Player - 2182D, 1 used, candle power 3

    Cruise Control - 181, 1 used, candle power 3

    Instrument Panel:

Indirect lamp (speedo) - 194, 2 used, candle power 2

Indirect lamp (gages cluster) - 168, 2 used, candle power 3

Clock or Tach - 1893, 2 used, candle power 2

Indirect lamp(fuel gage & ind. lamp) - 194, 2 used, candle power 2 (lower bulbs)

Indirect lamp(fuel gage & ind. lamp) - 161, 1 used, candle power 1 (upper bulb)

Tach (hood mounted) - 168, 2 used, candle power 3

Hope that helps. I'm pretty sure '70 would be the same; the chart in the '71 manual was dated 11/5/69. BTW, the spelling of gauges "gage" is GM's, not mine :TU:

    From my 70 Owner's Manual...
    (in case you can't read it, it's a 194 everywhere a 194 will fit; no 168s or 161s)
