Gas getting into my oil on '65 401

After much cranking (running my 850cca battery out about 15 times) I finally got my electra started. Turns out it wasn't starting due to a poor ground on the condensor, once I fixed that it started right up! :Dou: :Dou: :Dou:

Once it started I killed it after about 5 seconds, since it was in the garage and doing a good job of smoking the place up.

I went and did a once-over to check on the vital fluids, and found my crankcase to be full of gas!!! I have already changed the fuel pump, since the car had been sitting for so long.

Does this sound like the replacement pump I got is bad? Or is it possible that all that gas could have somehow gotten down past the rings while cranking it? Or some other way possibly?

Also, I noticed there is some small metal line coming from the pass. exh. manifold up to the carb, and it's broken (rusted) off at the manifold. Can I just ditch this thing and plug the holes?

    Thanks guys!!!

If the gas went in the oil after you replaced the pump, I would bet the pump diaphram has a hole in it.
The small steel tube from the exhaust manifold to the carb, is the hot air supply to the choke. The hot air heats a bimetal spring to open the automatic choke. If you do away with the tube, you'll have to back the choke setting off totally. I would replace/repair the tube. Happy motoring, Frank

Assuming you are still running the stock AFB carb, you may be able to fit an electric choke conversion kit to it thereby eliminating the need for that hot air pipe altogether.:TU:

I have some hot air tubes for sale, $30. Let me know if you're interested?

I was looking at the car today, and I noticed that there are two tubes going from the exhaust manifold to the carb. The hot air tube for the choke is in place and not broken, the tube that I was referring to comes off of the bottom of the exh. manifold and goes into the top of the carb at about the 10 o'clock position, right below the air cleaner mating surface. I also noticed some type mechanism on the manifold near this tube, looks to be a valve of some sort...

    Thanks for the input, guys!

I think he is referring to to tube that goes to the exhaust valve on the manifold where the front pipe hooks to. It is a pain in the butt since they freeze up and get rusted. If it is this,I'd eliminate it totally. Unless it it much needed

That second tube feeds filtered air down to the manifold, through a heat tube in the manifold, then up through the first pipe to the choke. There is a vacuum passage in the choke housing, and engine vacuum pulls the air through.
If it's a Carter AFB, I would put an electric unit on it as suggested. Carter or Edelbrock (same) bolt on... about $20-$25. Frank

Maybe that's what I need to do, I've got the motor up and running now, and the choke never opens fully. I needed to wire the choke open to drive the car, because of that problem.

BTW, I think the gas was getting into the crankcase past the rings from all that cranking, I changed the oil and fired it up, and ran it for almost 45 mins, a mix of driving and idling, and no problems.

    Thanks again!!
