Hi All.... While my car is on stands for the winter I thought I'd look after a few minor things... When I turn on my headlights I lose a 1/4 tank of gas on the gauge no matter how much it's reading. Turn them off, It comes back! More specifically if I just pull it to the running lights I only lose 1/8 tank. Full headlights loses 1/4 tank. High beams make no difference. It has done this since I've had it. I've pretty much changed all the wiring from the cowl forward. Just wondering where to look first. My guess is switch grounding. Any thoughts? Let me know... Thanks! Take Care
Replace the old fuel burning headlights for newer electric lights. The old ones were gas hogs. Especially the Quadrajet headlights. p Look and see if someone pulled power for the fuel gage from the lighting/switch. (earlier owner) The gage should be energized from the ignition switch. Sometimes people pull power from the fues block or something "downstream", without understanding the ramafications. "Wire Fires" are no fun. (reason I am pulling all the wiring/harnesses out and replaceng them)
I'll try that..... Thanks! And, LOL @ TrunkMonkey..... I never though of my very in-efficient gas guzzling headlights.....ou: Take Care
Sounds like a ground issue. The headlight switch has to have a good ground to it in order for the dome light to function. I think I would start there because sometimes the ground strap that is on there from the factory gets tossed when someone works on the dash.
