    Leave the springs alone.
Just retard your timing by a few degrees by turning the distributor, that's it;)

Retard your initial timing by 4*, back to 6*. That should cut the total to 32*. Lighter springs will make it more likely to ping, stay with your current springs.

If the upper hose is collapsing, that may be a restrictive thermostat, change it. How is your radiator? 180* is the perfect temperature for performance IMO.

The radiator is an old brass 4 row I just had rodded it should be fine. My water pump may be backward.

Ok. Changed the radiator cap to the cheapest Autozone had but it is sweet looks original. Going to retard the timing 4 degrees, but it will idle a little rough. How can I verify my cooling system is in good order. How long at idle for example till my thermostat opening?

    Thanks all and Larry,
    Mike

    Ok. Total succes

    Results: Good News
    80 * F to 175 * F in 10 minutes at idle, while I set the timing.

    Results: Bad News
Won't turn over. Click only. Earlier had Autozone check it. Only when hot. Just replaced the voltage regulator after the battery threw up.

    I'll take it all,
    Mike

    Except.....now ir won't start

I had this issue after I washed the underside on the engine when the battery threw up.

Hot start and or wet issue? Intermittent electrical my favorite.

You da man also, but you only planted the seed....... even if it was a strong seed. Larry watered it and it.

Are you a right coaster, greatscat?

    Cheers,
    Mike

Buicks have a pretty good chamber / burn even at low engine speeds and there is no need for lots of advance at low rpm that the light failure prone springs provide!
Dependant on your rear gears just make sure that all of your mech advance is in by 3000 rpm and then bring the motor on up to 4500 and make sure that no additional advance comes in , and that it does not bounce around!

LOL, no, just a little levity injected into the discussion . Thats what is great about this board, there are so many knowledgeable guys on this board that are willing to help solve a problem or offer advice to their Buick brothers.

Thanks to all. It does seem to buzz a little when I am nailing it. Very different than the ping/knock and yes the deck was dressed down 0.005" twice during the rebuild for reasons I'm not quite to terms with yet. :)

    Cheers,
    Mike
