Not to hyjack this thread but The story behind the GS in my avatar is hauntingly familiar. I went through similar drama, but in the end brought home a 70 GS455 mostly complete but very tired for 1200 bucks! It turned out a Buick collector in Ma had roughly 20 cars in his hoard and passed away suddenly at middle age around 1990. Not long after dirt bags started on the widow with offers to " clean up the property for free" and remove all the junk cars the Family got very protective of widow and no one could get near the property. I had put feelers out throughout the car cruising community that I was in the market to buy a 70 GS convertible project . A local Napa parts guy told me about a Buick guys collection he heard of and gave me a name and number, not knowing he had recently passed away. When I called the number I got the inquisition by a family member on "who gave me this number" and "why was I calling" and he nearly hung up on me. I explained I was looking for a project and after a long pause, the guy says What exactly was I looking for and I told him. He said yes there was a 70 GS 455 convertible they would sell but with strict conditions. Cash money, no negotiating, as is, only one visit to look and pick up, come alone, no browsing at anything else at the location and no questions! being young and stupid I agreed to all their demands and got a trailer and the cash and went to the address in a very secluded area in Western ma. (I heard banjo music there, I swear!) The Family member I dealt with was as friendly as the reaper , but I managed to get the story of the guys' passing and the story of dirt bags and others trying to scam the widow and as I loaded the car my eyeballs were on swivels eyeing all the Buick treasures all around. Noticing a lot of missing parts on the GS and parts needing replacements and seeing parts all around I pressed my luck and asked the reaper if there were any parts they would sell with the car, for extra money of course. There was a long pause and I was sure the sale was just voided for asking questions but for what ever reason the reaper nodded ok and I ended up with the car, a 70 455 engine that I was sure was the number matching motor for the car, ( it wasn't), a GS hood, A sport steering wheel and a real sweet full interior for a 72 Suncoupe and they again gave take it or leave it prices. I left a few NOS pieces that were ridiculously priced hanging in the garage there at the time but now would be a steal, but I only had 3 grand on me and I had every intention of blowing it all that day and living to tell about it, which was done. When I got my treasure home the only history of the car I found was a previous bill of sale in the ash tray that had previous owner info on it. Score! Called that guy and his first words were. " you got my GS! I want it , how much ?! . After letting him down gently that the car was not for sale he went on to tell me he didn't have parts or anything and the story of how the car had been stripped by thieves and he sold it to the people I just bought it from. (This explained the lack of hood, grill, bumper and steering wheel! ) As things turned out, I had looked at this very car about 8 years prior. I was still in college and had attempted to purchase it then and when I went to the bank of Dad for a short term loan , he was mad at me for one reason or another which I probably deserved and nixed the loan and the GS sale never happened. Funny how it found its way back to me 8 years later, albeit very tired and missing lots of parts. Nonetheless its been pounding pavement now for the last 18 years and I love it more now than ever.
