I bought my 87 grand national new in October 1987 drove the wheels off of it, bought a house in 1992 , got married in 1994 had my first daughter in 1995 the year before she was born I decided to give the GN a make over. Bad mistake Family Life got in the way. Nick came over today to help me get her out of the garage So he can take it to his shop to get her tuned up and give her some fresh custom paint. Now the dilemma my wife wants me to get down to just two cars I have four car now, 70 GS stage 1, 71 GS convertible , 72 Skylark, 87 GN Now Nick came down a couple months ago and picked up the 72 out of my yard we're going to build a rusto Mod race car out of that, with all parts that he has and I have it won't cost much but machine cost, story and pictures to follow, well she thought I was keeping the stage one and the GN and selling the convertible. Today I told her I was selling the GN and keeping the convertible. She said she thought I was kidding when I said I was going to sell the GN. The GN is her favorite car I have a feeling I'm gonna end up with having just three cars instead of two anyway The race car won't count it'll be a Nick's shop. here's pictures of the ultimate GN garage find. Update down to two cars 70 stage one and 87 GN. Sold the convertible and a 72 skylark. The race car never materialized.
Time to update this thread, Nick has been slowly picking away at the GN while working on other customers cars well he finally freed up some time to dedicate to the GN enjoy the pictures once I saw the car in person The paint work is phenomenal it's actually better than a mirror I knew I had to keep it there's a lot of great memories of driving to Bowling Green back in 1990 with my father.
Your car is looking great and it will be well worth the wait. I parked my 70 GSX in 1980 and finally got it out to start working on it in 2014 its a slow process but worth it. It is still a blast to drive and still turns heads at 49 years old. Good Luck with your car. Jim
Thanks Jim, how long have you owned your GSX ? I bought my double black 70 Stage 1 in August 1983. I was able to buy my grand national new.
June 26 1970 and as an 18 year old I may have driven it a little hard at times. I have always wanted a GN as a companion for my GSX but that would not please my wife, soooo, no GN.
Wow ! Original owner congratulations on hanging onto your prize possession all these years. It's not easy with all the ups and downs in life.
I found out about a Saturn yellow GSX 4 speed for 8k my parents won't give me loan after I had bought my stage one. I was looking to get a GS convertible I took my father to go look at a 71 a gold GS 455 the guy wanted 3K for it I guess my father was afraid being it was a convertible he said don't bring it home so I took the 3K and put it down on my grand national I'll never forget the day he came home from work an the car was sitting in the driveway. The best is when we drove out to Bowling Green Kentucky he wouldn't let me get behind the wheel he love the damn thing never drove a car like that his entire life I wish he was alive here today to be able to see the car when it is complete.
Wow!! Great story, or stories. Nice to hear about two of you guys keeping cars from original. I bought my GN in 89, got married in 94 and took it on our honeymoon...towing a motorcycle trailer too. Was my wife's favorite car as well. Until it got stolen. When I got it back I spent a bunch of money on it: GNX rear suspension from Kirban, stainless headers and exhaust from ATR, bigger turbo, injectors, etc. My wife never liked driving it after that, said I had taken the enjoyment out if it!?!? I really think it was too fast for her comfort level, or the power just came on too quick for her. When it was stock with a tuner and a catalytic converter delete and a 160* thermostat it was just perfect for her. I sold it after 20 years and I wish I had kept it. They've really been rising in value lately too. Can't wait to see yours when it's all done and back together!
Thanks Philip, here's progress from today still waiting on the impact strip an front bumper absorbers there transit right now.
Looks like a great place to store those original NOS quarter panels!! Hanging from the ceiling...out of the way of just about everything! Except maybe building collapse
Here's an update from today, Nick is finishing up assembling of the body and bumpers, car should be coming home shortly to get it tucked away in the garage, next to the Stage 1 soon to be iron head stage 2 before winter. I will be finishing up the rest of the car installing the interior, an moldings etc, I have to call my cousin the heater guy to come over and get the oil heater back up and running for the winter. thanks for viewing.
I've been working on that. Anybody need a 16 foot garage door and the Skylark hood in the tri-state area if not they will be getting cut up. 71 skylark hood has been SOLD.
