Just wanted to say hello. Traded for an unmolested 1970 GS and will begin frame off soon. Installing lift next week and need pointers on removing body to frame bolts. My first rodeo on one of these. Project will be long term and many more questions to come.
    Thanks

Any chance you can use it they way it is for a while before you take it apart? They are only original once.
Take lots of photos and label everything you can! (you did say it was your first rodeo)
I have been working on my 54 for 6 years and I have a ways to go...

I guess I wasn't clear. I have restored several including a 68 Corvette and 63 Impala SS. The Corvette was my only frame off. This is my first metal body frame off. Hundreds of pictures of the Vette were not enough. Took it apart and back together three times. Would take a lot of work to make the GS a driver. Been sitting for most of last 30 years. Does anyone know if I have to cut holes to access the frame to body captured nuts that will almost certainly strip out or spin? Was able to just cut the ones on the Vette but they were more accessible.
    Thanks for the welcomes,
    Jpf

Hey Jpf. I'm not too far from you in Spartanburg. I can't answer your body bolt question. I'm considering doing a frame off eventually. For now, she waits patiently.

Hole saw the floor above cage nuts that snap or strip and weld repair cages with new nuts.

I had a body mount in the trunk of the Cat that looked pretty worrisome... but the structure around it seemed solid so I decided to drill a hole with an 1/8" bit in the floor above it so I could give it a bath in PB Blaster for several weeks in advance. We just put a dab of weld over the hole later. It did seem to help.

Thanks for the information. Hole saw and penetrant were in my thoughts. Was hoping I was just missing something. Don't understand why they are so inaccessible. Started assembly of my two post lift this weekend. Once that is done, I get my shop back. Too old to keep crawling around on the floor.

I did a frame on for my 40 special with 41 super twin carb motor. Since I was working then (2 years ago) I asked my stepson if he would clean up the bottom of the car with the pressure washer. I figured clean it and call it good. I had a 3 day route to Spokane and when I got home I found he had completely scoured the underside including the fenders and running boards with hi speed rotary brushes and wire wheels! Then painted the entire frame and under body with black Rustoleum. Wow. What a surprise. All the running gear had previously been painted and the end result is really good. I’ve done several frameoffs before but frame on can get satisfactory results especially if you have a teen at home that wants to help.

You might want to start your own thread for that question, would take WAY to much room in someone else's thread for the answer.

Hey JPF, welcome! I'm new at this site also, just throwing info if needed or not, LOL. My car was frame-off also. I had it done by Road Killer Kustoms in Cartersville, GA. David Sloan owner. Unfortunately, the crash a few years ago caused him to change the career. You can still find him around the pro-touring.com site I think. He did a fantastic (and expensive) job on my car.
