Firewall markings

My Skylark still had original fender and firewall markings prior to the redo. They were yellow. But I don't know if it matters what plant or year or anything.

9 times out of 10 I find the crayon markings on the firewall under the black paint rather than on top of it, but a while back I restored a `70 GSX Stage 1, 4 speed car that had D/C to the right of the brake booster (toward the passenger side) on top of the black paint. It was in yellow marker and my research at the time found it to mean disc brakes/clutch.

 

That’s because someone painted over it!

 

The brake marks are bright yellow. The paint codes appear to be different crayon. Some look dull yellow and some white. They were done in a different place I bet.
Body paint info would have been done by Fisher before body paint. The D and C was probably done by a Buick worker. Check out these a member found cleaning up his car. Looks white. My guess someone tried to rub them off.

I have been lucky enough to see many original cars from Flint and Framingham plants from friends and junkyards. I never see any marks on Framingham cars. Flint cars if Disc brakes and Auto would have just a D. If Disc and Clutch it would be DC. If Manual brakes then M. If Manual and Clutch MC. Most Buick’s had Power Drum brakes but I have never seen a P? I’m not saying it doesn’t exist but there are a ton of Skylarks out there that were power drums.

Here is another 70 magazine test car. It’s an early 70 Stage-1 Auto that was given the GSX treatment and released to the press. The D is clearly visible.

If anyone does need paint sticks don't buy them from Quanta for $5.50/ea because they are just buying the Markal paint sticks for $1 and putting their label on it. You can buy them for $1.89 each plus shipping. A Google search will probably show other sites that have them even cheaper.

Here is a 70 GS350 magazine article. Car has power drums and no brake marks. It’s impossible to tell what plant it came from but it’s an early press car which were almost always Flint cars.
