When I was removing the intake, I came across two bolts that were frozen fast. They laughed at my impact gun. The scoffed at my torch and impact gun. They were even impervious to my cursing and wrench throwing. An then I found a can of this stuff in my basement... I have had mixed results with PB Blast over the years. This stuff was amazing! I sprayed it on, came back about two hours later and the bolts zipped right out. I give Tri-Flow two thumbs up!
Started the car yesterday! I had two gas leaks, a leak from a radiator hose and a leak from the radiator cap (never had that problem before!) and the drain plug in the oil pan. But, it is running pretty good and the leaks are all fixed. I threw the Holley on with the "out of the box" settings, so that will need to be adjusted and I would like to get the points conversion done. My kids want to go to the track on Friday night, so some of that stuff might have to wait.
Got the engine running! The only thing I did as far as tuning is to set the base timing at 12 BTDC and add a larger shooter to the secondary side (to cover an obvious bog). Motor runs great! The car...not so much I took it to my brother's garage for an inspection and it was painfully obvious that the steering and front suspension is shot. So, it stayed on his lift and he is replacing all of the steering components and shocks/springs.
Making progress! Suspension and steering almost done. Added real gauges and a tach. Also, had to throw my IROC rims on to pass inspection until I decide what to do for rims...
Thanks guys! The car is pretty decent. The paint looks better in photos than in person. My son and I may try to correct that this week with the buffer and some compound.
Note: It is MUCH easier to tune a carb when the PCV line is plugged into the valve and not dangling off the base of the carb! Rain finally stopped and we took it for a ride yesterday. It needs an alignment and the timing curve adjusted. I forgot how weak 150HP feels! LOL
Got the machine aligned and the electronic points conversion finished. Car sits too high in the front. I used Moog stock replacement springs, but I think I will need to cut off 1/2 to 1 coil. But, it is running pretty good. I have the timing set at 15 initial, 35 total and with vacuum it is 40 at idle. No sign of pinging, so I may add some more initial advance to see how it reacts. I started tuning the 650 double pumper. Didn't get my wideband O2 sensor installed yet, so only working on the basics. It has a definite bog when the secondaries open! I think I will try moving the secondary pump cam to hole #2 to make the shot more aggressive at tip in. The weather for Friday is looking decent, so I may get a chance to make some passes in my 150Hp rocket!
Drove the car to work today! Things I realized: 1) I miss heated seats. I am getting older and my herniated disks really appreciate the heated seats in my Subaru 2) It is nice to have a defroster...especially in the rear window. 3) At 6' 1" with super long arms, I still can't reach the manual crank on the passenger window! 4) A rear view mirror without Parkinson's would be nice 5) A side view mirror on the passenger side would be really nice And lastly...I really enjoy driving these old cars! I may try to daily it for a while.
Been driving the car, but only sporadically. It seems I am always hauling stuff in the hatch area of my Subaru. Anyway, this weekend I fiddled a little more with the carb to try to remedy the bog I was experiencing when the secondaries would start to open. I tried EVERYTHING. Bigger shooters, different pump cams in different holes, larger jets...none of it solved my problem. Turns out my carb problem was actually a timing problem! I put the lightest advance spring I have in the distributor and it solved the problem. Now I get to undo a bunch of my changes (one at a time)!
Ah yes, the joys of working over one's cars...I still have to do it. Last year the expensive Q-jet I had on the Electra decided it wasn't going to work right and ate 3 fuel pumps in the process. Now that I have the proper AFB back on it runs like a trooper. It's a great feeling when you get it dialed in. Sounds like you're just about there! Good Luck and welcome from Canada!
Thanks Marc and good luck with yours too! The funny thing about my issue is that I KNOW to get timing sorted first. I tell people it all the time: "Sort out the timing before you touch the carb". Why didn't I follow my own advice?? Stupid humans...
