Yes i think so, but i thought it was blow through, thats draw through, hey 25 years have passed.....but, i do believe thats it, but i thought the nail head was in the middle, and a guy was nealing next to it, and i dont remember the later style motors....but whats the chances of 2 covers...so theres a pic of a turbo powered nail head! AWESOME...is that an archive pic on a website, or do you own the mag?
I'll have to dig for it, but I have a photo of that turbo Nailhead. I saw the engine on display at the Flint engine plant tour in 2003. I didn't take a photo as cameras weren't allowed, but was sent one after having a photo essay of early Buick engines published in the Bugle in late 2003 / 2004.
Buick brought the turbo nailhead to the GS nats a couple years ago, original crate and all. They had some info on it that it produced over 800ft/lbs of torque, that was the real reason they cancelled it. They couldn't get a transmission to hold it. It was really cool to look at, you could walk right up and touch it.
Nice! Were both exhaust manifolds routed into the single turbo that is bolted to the top of the intake manifold? hard to tell. looks like two exhaust pipes entering the turbo from passenger side. seems like a tricky asymmetric design.
Thanks. It hooks alright, but not quite the 60' I was after. I think with a different slick I could pick-up a tenth or two. I really don't plan on racing it....I just turned a couple of passes to see what it would do. -Lee Atomic Radio www.atomicpinup.com
I can't answer that one...I saw this engine 5 years ago...the photos weren't taken by me. Now, if Roberta happened to stroll along into this thread, she'd probably be able to answer your question.
Thanks! weird that only one side of the V8 engine exhaust gives pressure to the turbo charger. seems like the engine would be in a strange asymmetric back pressure condition... ???
you sure about that? thats an awful lot of torque looking at that setup. does anyone know how different the turbo nailhead was than the regular nailhead? besides pistons and turbo.
ok lets get this back to the top. i want to turbo the nailhead but im leaning towards an engine swap right now. anymore in depth info on the turbo nailhead above? or any other turbo nailhead?
if you look at the bottom rear of the pass. side manifold, there is a flange.. I am assuming buick would have had an exhaust crossover pipe running from the driver's manifold to that flange ala the turbo buicks of the '80's.. in fact the entire setup is very similar to the carb'd turbo buicks of the late '70's/early '80's. OH and here is the May 1970 Hot Rod magazine article which has a bit of info on the turbo nailhead: http://www.lakelandraceway.com/friends_garage/buicks_experimental_v8s.htm wes:TU:
thanks for the info. it seems it made 708 ft/lbs of torque and 360 hp. lol thats crazy. why the hell haven't people turbo'd these engines? they said it was pretty much stock except for some heat treatment and the turbo parts. sounds like VERY easy gains.
yep, now just think about head porting, better turbo and fuel technology, intercooling, better internals, stronger tranny and drivetrain parts... :Brow: :Brow: :Brow: :Brow: I'm currently getting together parts for a home brew "turbo in the trunk" setup for my '64 rivi ala STS :3gears:
yea tell me about it. head porting would be a beast of an improvement. i can see a 700+ on pump and over a 1000 on race. thats about average for a boosted big block (even though the nailhead is a relatively small big block).
