i did a search and saw a really old thread from 2003. is there a list of the fastest nailheads anywhere? i wouldn't mind having a 12 sec 64 electra. i don't think i've ever seen a nailhead with forced induction either.

thats not bad at all. that engine would probably put my car in the high 12's low 13's. question is: whats done to it? unfortunately there are like no specs...

I'm not going to race this car, but did put an 1/8 mile pass on it:

Weighs a lot less than a 60's Buick though. Turned 7.31 which equates to about 11.50 in the 1/4. The motor is a 0.060" over 401 (12:1 compression). Ran it on VP 110 octane with slicks.

The most interesting blown Nailheads are the ones that blow INTO the exhaust port, and use the intake port as the exhaust.

Yup, takes a special cam, and no off-the-shelf headers, either!

Anyone have a pic of one of these? I've heard this story for years, but no confirmation that anyone has actually done it. Love to see a shot of one.

Yeah thinking outside the box is what I'm good at. Another guy on here that has a "green" car and I had kicked the idea around of trying it on a 455 to see what it woud do.

That dragster looks like a V-16. Check out the plug wires. Hard to really see from the old pic.

The old Caddy flathead V-8 had the exhaust in the "V" also. There was one at a local swap meet in the spring. I thought about buying it just as a conversation peice, but could only imagine the grief from the wifey.:spank:

Google "blown Nailhead" and you will find pics...

found a pic of a huge supercharger that is about 8 feet tall. so maybe i should've asked of a supercharged/turbo charged nailhead that can fit under a regular hood.

A turbo would be the way to go and fuel injected of course. Cranks and rods are already forged so 8:1 or so compression forged pistons would complete the rotating assembly. www.sds.com has the controller(s) and the injector systems. There is a book by "Corky Bell" that should help anyone learn the basics of turbo's. Then again a V6 from a T-type would drop the weight of a Skylark a bunch and with the 2004R you could run 3.73's and cruise with the effect of 2.32's! Get the 4.1 liter V6 and have more cubes to work with. Doing a 401 would be possible if you can fabricate and have the cash.
Should be easy enough for the injector bungs in the intake runners. Homework would tell you what used injectors would be suitable for the sds system and the amount of fuel needed to feed that many cubes. Getting an upper plenum from a newer car should be adaptable with a plate if there is hood room.

'64 Electra? The V6 would be hard to see in that cavern but you sure would have plenty of room to work, live and do any other miscelaneuos activities you might wish to engage in!
There is probably an upper plenum that would be easily adaptable to the top of the intake. Plenty of room for an intercooler. www.fullthrottlespeed.com has a lot of the parts for D-I-Y projects.

Are the nail exhaust manifolds reversible? You know, turn one downside up to hold a turbo?

Ty O. has the idea to do a turbo system so maybe he will chime in as he must have more info already gathered. Oh, yeah it's possible. '64 Electra, what does that weigh? 12's, I don't know about that without a serious diet!

Most would be the custom fabrication so welding skills or a friend who would not charge a ton would help as the nail itself is a good candidate for a turbo. The only reason they were done as Supercharged versions as turbo's were in their infancy back in the mid 60's, Corvair's and an Olds(?)?
No special belts or pulleys to adapt. Full throtle has the piping to make the inlet and IC piping along with some good priced intercoolers.
Remember every 14-15psi doubles the power. Even 6psi would add a huge amount of power and torque and at that level an IC would not be neded. Add the IC and crank to 9psi and you're looking at a 40% power increase with a minimal gas mileage decrease.

I'd get some photo's of cars at shows that have turbo's that were custom installed and speak to the owners and see what problems were the most challengeling to them. Go from there along with your own research! Good luck!

thanks a lot for the info! i was thinking about the gn engine and the engine i HIGHLY DESIRE (secret) is 10,000. but with the power it puts out is well worth it. it's just the point of paying 10,000 thats holding me back for like 10 years lol. i still have yet to see a turbo charged 401/425 anywhere.

In the 80's i used to own a magazine, it was like hot rod or car craft i think, and on the cover it had 3 or 4 nail heads on it, in the middle was a factory experimental turbo motor, complete running motor. It was destined for production, but never made it because the new 400 came out. I wore that mag out and dont know what happened to it. I am sure it was 64 to 66 era, SO there was some factory work on turbo'd nail heads....i wish i still had that mag, it was better than playboy...at the time ...lol

So somewhere out there in a magazine collection is all the factory details, maybe it was car-life or popular mechanics, i just cant remember....i know the motor was green and it had an aluminum intake on it, it was blow through carbed.....
