This has been bugging me for a long time, and George's question reminded me about it. I have never seen a 66 Skylark GS with a fan shroud, and I own 4 of them, not to mention all of the shows and 66's I've met along the road. They all have a little vestigial shroud bolted to the top of the upper radiator cover. The core supports all have the shroud tabs at the bottom, but non GS cars came with shrouds as far as I know. I know that the GS required some modifications to fit the 401, but I figure they would have gotten a shroud made by '66. That said, I have never had a 66 with an overheating problem, even in the dog days of summer. Am I wrong in thinking they didn't come with them? Have they all been broken and discarded by the time I get a look at them?

    Addendum...

My '66 parts book index lists Shroud, Fan as group 1.260, but when I went to that section, there is no fan shroud listed for any of the Buick A-body models. No part number, then no part. I know that people offer shrouds, and it is probably a good idea, but if it doesn't belong on the car, I don't want one on it.

    Dan,

I believe the fan shrouds came on the air-conditioned cars only...I don't have any of those (yet!), how about you?

My '66 parts book shows, in group 1.260, a pn
    1372617 'shroud' on the:
    '400 ENG. A.C. OR A.C MODIF. & H.D. RAD
    ... all for...$9.60! ahhhh...the good ol' days....

I actually used a 300 shroud on my GS....flipped it upside down, and trimmed about 1" off of it to make it fit. My modified '66 and even my '66 Special both run hot. So the fan shroud did help me...

I considered asking Kirban Performance (who repos the GS shroud) if we could do a 'group buy' of shrouds at a discount.....I'll give them a call again next week for more info...

Are you going to any shows this year? (it's been awhile since I've seen you, like 19 years???!!!)

My 65 GS with factory A/C has never had a fan shroud. When I bought the car it had been in a frontal collision and the radiator was missing. After I rebuilt the engine I bought a rebuilt radiator in Phoenix and drove this car to work all summer long with outside temps up to 110 degrees here in Kingman Arizona. My NAPA temperature gage never got over 198, and I never had the temp light come on. I have a Buick service manual for the 65 GS models, there is not one picture of a fan shroud. I have seen several pictures of 65 GS cars that have a shroud, but I can not say whether my car was equiped from the factory with one. I hope some can find out for sure. Where is Babeola?Take care all.

I have a 65 with a fan shroud. This GS is not an air car, and when I get over 20 years ago, it did not have one. I had another 65 post GS and it was an air car and I changed the shroud and four core radiator. I also have a 66 GS with air, just a parts car, and it does not have a shroud, it had the front end replaced in the 80's and I do not think they could find one. I am not sure if all air cars had shrouds, or if there was a HD cooling option that did. I have been looking for another one for a 66 but have had no luck. Good to know about the upside down 300 trick. I did kinda the same for a 67 GS used a 300 and cut about an inch off the depth and had to cut out part of the bottom to let the fan clear, but it works and helps cool the 67. As I remember, may be wrong the 65/66 are fiberglass and the later are ? rubber or somthing. Bill Sangster

None of my 66 has A/C. Two of them, I am sure, never had a shroud. I am not sure about the other two, though.

    66 Hood

To change the subject a litte here I would like to know with the supply of 66's you have, would you have an extra 66 GS hood you would like to sell?

I do have a good example of the shroud you are talking about. I got it off of 65 GS ac car in a bone yard. I picked it up for a 65 post GS ac car which my Dad owns, it was like your cars no shroud. The issue here is we have found the car had the ac added at the dealer, that might explan the missing shroud.

Also the 66 ac car I have, had a motor tranplant which was preformed by kids and they let the GS oil pan go back with the core and this is how I got the car ( another story ). The engine swap may be when my 66 lost its shroud

    66 GS Fan Shroud

I am the orginal owner of a non-AC 66 GS and it did not come from the factory with a shroud.

I have a '65 GS I am restoring right now that came from the factory with AC and a fan shroud. When I got the car, someone had taken rivets and pieces of sheet metal to put it back together with--looks like a belt came off at some point in its past and broke the shroud into 3 pieces. I expoxied it back together, but plan on either buying one of the reproduction ones from Year One or finding a good used one (I noticed someone earlier in this thread said they had one--are you interested in selling it?) I actually have a digitial picture of it mounted in the car, but this forum won't let me attach it--says the file is too big. If anyone wants to see it, E-mail me at Stoneautomotive@juno.com and I will send it to you.

GSX455: The automatic hardtop is a project waiting in the wings. I don't know if I will sell it or get to work on it, but it is complete with power windows, steering and brakes with long console and tach.It is blue with blk interior and is rustfree but will need some old dents repaired(bondo removed) The numbers match, (even the carb)and I have had it in inside storage in Oklahoma City for about ten years. I guess the short answer is, no, I don't have an extra hood, but I do have an extra car, ha, ha. Dan

Brian, No I do not want to sell this shroud as I need two and am looking for another one myself.Sorry

Dan, Thanks for the reply about the hood but the last thing I need is another car even if you desided to sell it. I would have no problem adding another one to the stable, but I have add 4 cars since I was put on notice by my wife that we would be in divorce court if I added another car. I think I have found the the upper limit, and it would not be wise on my part to push it any more.

Keep me in mind if you come across a good hood.

GSX455 did you get the message I sent you?

There's a 66 GS hood with scoops on ebay. I posted it to the ebay parts section, and sent you a pm or email(I can't remember which)

Dan, I missed the hood on ebay thanks for the lead anyway.

I have come across a hood which was only on a car for a couple of years with excellent chrome, it has been stored in side since 68 how much would you say it is worth?

    GSX455,
The 66 hood chrome scoops in decent condition sell for around 300 on ebay. I would think areally nice pair would be worth around 400 or so. The hood letters are also not easy to find I guess I'd pay 500 or less if I could carry it home, and not pay for shipping. As always, less is better! Good luck. Post a pic when you get it. I'd like to see it. Dan
