if this is in thw wrong place I apologize. i recently got so TA performance headers for my 1972 455 GS convertible. my plan is 3 inch exhaust from the header with an H pipe to a flowmaster super 50 with electronic cutouts just before the muffler and then the pipe being necked down to fit through my N25 bumper. my goal is quiet for when my wofe and son are in the car but hella loud when the mood suits. the engine has been rebuilt and does have stage 1 valves in 1971 heads so I figure it will breath better, perform better and give me my loud muscle car like high school without making me file for divorce. Id love yalls POV. and this is a cruiser.
I have MT headers with a 3” X pipe to Magnaflow 14264 lazy s mufflers. 3” tailpipes with Dennis Wheeler’s N25 tips. System is nice and quiet cruising around but screams when you are on it. The cut outs are unnecessary IMO, how often will you need to use them?
I run magnaflow 2.5" behind headers on my big valve 455. X pipe. Install was a snap. Very good fit. I have the turbo style mufflers, straight through with packing. Mellow at idle and cruise, but roars at WOT. I will definitely use magnaflow again.
Exhaust cutouts are for children that never outgrew the "Mommy! Look at me...Mommy! Look!...Mommy! Are you watching?" phase.
If you want ‘fast with class’ use a 2.5” system with Walker 17749s. 3” is bigger than you need, and cutouts are, well, stangified. I can’t go to buy beer without seeing some asshat in a stang go ‘BLAHBLAHBAPPIRYBLAPPITYBLAHHHH’ through a yellow light. Might as well have ‘Infn’t it aint 5.0 your to slow!’ on the rear glass.
I fully admit I haven't outgrown the obnoxious sound of open headers, I doubt I ever will at this rate. It wont get used often, but I want the option.
I'm still running the stock dual tailpipes, but with stainless 2.5" collectors into Magnaflows. Installed 20 years ago, zero problems.
Do we have a favorite vendor or sponsor vendor for the Walker 17749? Summit has them of course. Sounds like the way to go for me. Doing EFI and notice my mufflers are corroding at the welds a bit. Might as well get it done. 3" in from TA headers and 2.5" out. Running Scott Brown's mufflers from 15 or more years ago.. used to be racemufflers.com.
Appears that my Straightline Performance mufflers are 2.5" in and out. 2.5" exhaust after the TA headers. Guess I'll get a caliper. I'll probably be fine but need to be sure. Damn details! Description from Amazon on the Walker 17749: Muffler Inlet Diameter - 2.25 in.. Muffler Inlet Diameter Designation - Inside Diameter. Muffler Outlet Configuration - Offset. Muffler Outlet Connection Type - Pipe Connection. Muffler Outlet Diameter - 2.5 in..
Nope, 2 1/2" in and out. I used these mufflers for years. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/wlk-17749/overview/
My opinion is that 3 inch after mufflers is wasted effort. 3 inch muffler flows about the same as 2.5 in pipe. I use these and can drop the whole center section in about ten minutes. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/flo-15930/overview/
My exhaust is flanged just in front of the mufflers with an X pipe. The whole X drops out easily. Yes, 3” tail pipes are way harder to fit and probably not worth it performance wise.
