Exhaust suggestions?

I recently bought a '65 Biscayne with a 454 4-speed. It has Flowmaster exhaust, which I hate. Much too loud and obnoxious. I like a little rumble, but not too loud. I have Walker exhaust on my '68 Cutlass and it sounds great, but almost too quiet, more like an OEM exhaust. I have Dynomax mufflers on my '62 Lincoln, and they're a bit loud, especially for a Lincoln. Anyone have any thoughts on a muffler that has a nice tone without being so loud you can't have a conversation going down the road? Video clips would be nice :)

Look at the Flowmaster Delta Flow 50 Series, I have the 942553 2-1/2" offset /offset mufflers on my 69 GS & I really like the sound, Can carry on a conversation in the car & still hear the stereo....

"Super Turbos" from just about any manufacturer are always a nice, safe go to. I've got and have always had Magnaflows or Super Turbos on almost everything. If I want max power, I do Magnaflows. If it's a driver and I want it to sound good with that nice classic V8 sound, I do Super Turbos.

I had magnaflows on the green car for a minute and they really impressed me in regards to how mellow and quiet at cruise they were but how aggressive at wot they became.

I went 2.5" Magnaflow. Its nice.
But I've seen and herd Borla.
    I liked it.

  7. Seems I’m odd man out on Magnaflows. I bought my car with Magnaflows on it and thought it was too loud and sounded very “metallic” while at a normal cruising speed. I swapped them for Dynomax Super Turbos and added a pair of Vibrant resonators in the tailpipes and I can hold a conversation on my Bluetooth radio at 75 mph now, but still think it sounds plenty strong at idle and low rpm.

On your BizCane do your pipes go all the way out rear bumper. If they are cut off at the muff not good. Sounds like turbos would your liking.

Summit Racing used to have a house brand muffler that was very similar to Magnaflows, only cheaper. Not sure if those are still available or not but they sound really good and don’t drone going down the road.

Walker makes one with a valve so it runs quiet when cruising and only gets loud at full tilt. Larry I think reviewed these in an old thread. Ask him.

Big Guy, you have 3 choices for your Biscayne if you're looking for a performance exhaust system:

Flowmaster- Their's is an aluminized steel H-pipe system with Super 40 mufflers. As you have discovered, it's quite aggressive and not for everyone. Unfortunately, you can't buy this system without mufflers so you can't have that system with a less aggressive muffler like a Super 50 or a 70 series.

MagnaFlow- This is a stainless system with an X-pipe and 14" mufflers. Much quieter than the Flowmaster but sounds awesome when you step on it. A nice mellow sound cruising and at idle with much less interior noise than what you have.

Pypes- Again, a stainless system with an X-Pipe, and a choice of 3 different mufflers, or no mufflers so you can use what you want. Their Race Pro muffler flows the most of the 3, and is their quietest. It's very similar to the MagnaFlow muffler. Their Street Pro muffler is a 2-chamber turbo style muffler that louder than the Race Pro, but not obnoxious at cruise. The Violator is a straight-thru design, and the name is self explanatory as far as sound level goes.

Dynomax Super Turbo's are an excellent choice of muffler too. Great sound control and excellent flow. The mufflers mentioned by flynbuick were known as Dynomax VT's. They were a great muffler but out of production for some time now. There are videos with most of the systems at https://classicmusclecarexhaust.com/ so hopefully that will help you come to a decision.

Ive got dynomax race turbo bullet mufflers. They are loud. I'm not sure how they even qualify as mufflers to be honest. I'd stay away from those.

I have Magnaflows, and I love them. MT headers, 3" x pipe into 3" tails and N25 exhaust. Nice rumble, quiet at cruise, and they scream at WOT

I'm thinking about going with the Walkers that I have on my Cutlass:

The Biscayne has a bit of a cam in it, so it should sound about like the Cutlass. Nice rumble, not loud.

Walker 17749 will handle 500 hp and sound mellow at full throttle. Quiet in the cabin too.
Walker 17222 handles 2000 hp yet just slightly more power sound at full throttle.
Long standing reputation with Walker performance and longevity. A safe purchase at a reasonable price.

Larry, Were your tailpipes custom bent to fit the N-25 exit location, and what N-25 exhaust tip did you use to connect to a 3" tailpipe?

Thanks for that. I asked that question because I've always wondered whether the Pypes system that was developed for the '68-'72 442 & '70-'71 GTO would also fit high enough to accommodate the N-25 outlet location. Being a dealer for Pypes, I would love to be able to positively say that their kit would fit that Buick application, but Pypes has not tried an N-25 install to see if it works, therefore they cannot guarantee a proper fit. And then there's the issue of 2.5" or 3" tips too. No sense in claiming it fits if there's no tip to fit the tubing diameter. The N-25, IMHO, is the coolest of all the GM A-Body exhausts.
