Considering changing my 300 out for a larger engine (still want a small block). At first, I looked into building the 300 and after speaking with a few machine shops and mechanics, I'm not sure the cost is worth it.

What I'm looking for is a good cruiser that has some more get up and go. Ideally 300hp would be good. This winter I'm going to put a set of 3:42 gears in.

Thought I would get some suggestions from you guys.

'66 Skylark currently have a 300 engine 4bbl and duel exhaust.

The TA Rover heads would bolt right onto your sbb 300 block, would be easy to get 300HP with those on your sbb 300. If it runs good now, perhaps just add the TA heads and a cam to go with them? Going from heads that flow around 150 CFM intake flow to heads that have around 225 out of the box intake flow will add a good power boost. Also the combustion chambers are smaller that will help raise your compression that will help increase power as well.

The TA heads would also work on a sbb 340. Unfortunately no one makes an after market intake for the sbb 300 or sbb 340 so either the factory one has to be used or a custom one will need to be made. But with only the goal of 300 HP, the factory 4bbl intake will be more than enough.

Even better would be to use a sbb 350 crank in the sbb 300 and gain 50 cubes with a .050" over bore or 362 cubes if you have the sbb 340/350 crank stroked to 3.990" and use a set of nascar take out rods. All the while maintaining that factory "stock" look.

There is plenty you can do with a sbb 300, most machine shops just don't know what can be done to them though.

Then there is the sbb 350 that has a bit more aftermarket support for it that you can do a lot with too but doesn't have aftermarket heads that will work for it.

If your asking about a foreign engine swap, then you might want to go to a different website for that info?

Thanks for the information. Where's the place best to look for the TA rover heads?

Engine runs well, leaks here and there but the car sat for a long time prior to me getting it last year, so it needs most gaskets replaced. I'm looking to stick with a Buick engine.

Any idea why they don’t mention the 215? Maybe too much head for that or the valves would contact the block?
