I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who engine sounds like whining like it has a blower mounted on it.

And Im assuming you don't have a supercharger?

Engine noises are sometimes hard to pin point. A whining noise could indicate a bad alternator or generator. Not sure what year engine you have or what kind of vehicle its in. First step would be to maybe take off all the belts and run the engine. See if the noise goes away. If its still there it might be easier to hear without the pullys and fan spinning. You can also use a long extension as a stethescope

could be a slight chance of it being the transmission.

Good point, could be the front pump on the trans. Or just really low on fluid

Cold weather. Check under the hood for a cat. :pp

    True story.

Back in 1974, my next door friend hopped in his car and drove to school, and got out of the car and started walking away, and then he heard his cat "meow" and crawl out from under the front. (big ol' 1971 cream yellow Impala)

    He took him home.

About 6 months later, he started the car and heard a loud "thwack" and the cat yelped and ran out from under the car.

He found him behind the house, a little fur missing from his tail/butt area, but otherwise fine.

He made a habit of slapping the hood of the car before getting in, and Snoopy would sometimes drop out from under the car and run around the back of the house. (He would also sleep on the hood or the roof on occasion).

But he never got another ride or nibbled by the fan.

    Or....

That's the best use for a harmonica I've ever seen.
