Hello Everyone, the red color came off of my GS fender emblem. I had some red spray paint lying around my garage, so I went ahead and tried to use that. The paint did not stick. I did scratch the surface with some sandpaper first. Should I use some etching primer first? What type of paint should I use for the top coat? Thank you in advance for any help.
I use Testor's red enamel. Small jar will last forever. I have never prepped the underlying chrome beyond just removing the old paint by scraping with a toothpick or plastic pick. What works best for me is to remove all the old paint and then flood the letters with the red paint using a brush or a small syringe. No need to really "paint" just get a drop on the end and dab it in. Keep adding drops and they will flow to the edges. Just don't put in in too think or could wrinkle as it dries. Keep the emblem flat while you do this, I just get a small box and poke the pins through to keep it in place. If you get any on the chrome ridges it will scrape right off with a toothpick after it has dried for a few minutes while it's still somewhat soft. Do the same thing with flat black in between the letters. Takes about 2-3 minutes to do it this way rather than trying to painstakingly paint it in there and comes out looking perfect...no brush lines, smooth coloring. Looks like a baked enamel pin when you are done.
I used chrome polish on some emblems I have. As I recall I started out using the chrome polish to clean up and shine up the chrome on the emblem. As I was doing it some of my cleaning efforts got onto the painted areas. To my surprise it removed the old paint. Mark
Testers enamel pens are awesome too. I used the red and the black one on my gs emblems and they turned out great and very easy.
I just finished painting my first emblem. It turned out nice. I also purchased a paint pen in case I need a touch up in the future. I might put some clear coat on it for extra protection. Thanks Everyone for all of your help.
