Im getting ready to upgrade my rear for thee ol' BB Ttype, just bought an 86' GN 8.5 and I need to swap out the spool that's in it. Any experience with these two units? Id like to hear some opinions and pros and cons before I spend the :dollar: .

    chime in
    thanks

Eaton all the way. I've put together a lot of rears in GNs, an Eaton with 400 lb springs is perfect for a mostly street car with some strip duty. If you're more track oriented and occasional street use, 800 lb springs and possibly an extra clutch(application dependent) is the ticket. I'm sure "Monzaz" on this board can help you get what you need, I'm running parts from him in my Skylark rear now. Opinions will vary on the powertrax, I think they are junk and I've seen enough break to know how much damage they cause when they fail. If you put enough power to them, they will fail. They are noisy(clunking on turns) as well.

are you referring to the no slips or the lock rites? the no slips were supposed to be virtually silent according to carcraft...

how involved are the two installations? can i do either in my garage with little to no experience with the inside of the pumpkin?

ya, power trax are junk....mostly because they are rated at a very low horsepower...no on checks the rating...most people thimk its cheaper to power trax their car, its set up all you do is slide the stuff in and your done..IF you have enough clearance...once it scatters, you fix it, you could have put any real posi unit and gears in ya wanted...the first time...the right way...

The Eaton is harder to install, but can be done without an engineering degree:) You'll need a dial indicator, and a micrometer or digital caliper as far as special tools. You'll need to purchase some marking compound as well. There's a bunch of instructional type info all over the web. In a nutshell, you'll basically just need to set your backlash, contact pattern, and properly preload the bearings. The gears already being set up properly to start with is a time saver and you won't need to buy a pinion depth tool. Measure your backlash before disassembly, and duplicate that number when you reassemble. It will be in the neighborhood of 7-10 thousandths normally.

Josh, Did you say the rear has a SPOOL? or mini spool?

    What gear ratio?

Need to know these facts before any opinions of ease of set-up and which unit might be easier to do with the set-up you have right now.

Let me know and will go from there. Jim

sorry for the confusion...the correct term would be mini-spool and thanks for chiming in :beer i was just getting ready to PM you about a yukon posi unit and axles, how much would I be looking at going to 30sp and having it shipped to 60941?

thanks again for all your help

Ok - so if you have the gears already installed you like then the swap of the eaton posi should be pretty much a snap as all you need to worry about is the side to side carrier adjustment AKA backlash. .006-.009 for the used gears in there.

Axles are a no brainer side in c-clip them and your done. Jim

yeah but boy $600 is alot to spend if you can do the car more justice elsewhere with the other $150-200 you'd save.

id have to have personal experience to spend that and i haven't, not when ive got others tell me the eaton or yukon are just as good

anyone got any experience with the detroit?
