    Hi,
There is some horrible bit of silver ducting on my carb. I don't actually know what it does or is for. Could anybody tell me what it is for and what would be a better replacement?

That’s the preheater hose. It can look better if you remove it and treat it like an accordion to make it shorter. You can also get them in black which in my opinion look better than silver.

Thanks for the information Brian, much appreciated. Is there anything in particular I should look for, or just measure the diameter and then google black ducting?

There are a number of vendors who sell them. Try CARS Inc. and Rock Auto in the US. I’m not familiar with vendors in the UK. Dorman part number is 96034 for the black one and 96024 for the silver.

Thanks so much for the links. Is there any particular trick to fitting? I know that sounds basic but the hose was so soft that when I tried putting some force to fit it, it just crumpled easily. Would some lithium grease help with fitting? Would jubilee clips both ends be a good idea?

Clips are not used on this hose. And don't use grease. A new one will be firmer and will stay in place slid over the openings.

It’s a tight fit and if you are not careful, you bend the edge of the tube and that makes it harder to fit. Go slow and there won’t be a problem.
