i've got a 65 GS with the original engine. tonight i noticed an oil leak coming from the oil pan gasket. :ball: what is involved in dropping the oil pan on this engine? keep in mind that it is a GS, i have heard that the oil pan is different on the GS's, compared to the other 65 401's. will i have to unhook the motor mounts and lift the engine to drop this oil pan?

    thanks,
    Steve

Yup,i did it not too long ago,you have to unbolt the motor mounts and lift the engine from the balancer, not too bad to be honest i thought it`d be worse.

    Thanks

thanks for the info George. Another question has stirred up since i posted. Could a small leak in the gasket cause my pressure to drop almost 20 psi? it's not spraying terribly, but its enough that it really concerns me.

    Thanks,
    Steve

no,the leak will not cause oil pressure drop, you may have another problem, take the pan out and take a look,u may have a clogged pick up like in my case,or a oil pump on its way out or also make sure the oil pan isnt dented inwards which would cause the pick up tube to not be able to suck oil, just some thoughts.

    Thanks

thanks a lot for asking George. i was actually going to e-mail you about this.

well, i have very little oil pressure like i said. so, i figured i would go ahead and change the oil pump as well. i am getting ready to order my pump from carmen this week. my question is - how difficult is this? and how much would i have to lift the engine to get the pump out? the GS service manual isn't really a big help on removing the pump.

just a little background on myself. i am 23 and this is my first old car. i am pretty much a backyard mechanic. yet very mecanically inclined. pretty much what i know about the nailhead is from this great website, books i have read, and talking to people such as yourself.

what i am trying to determine now is, should i pay somebody to do the work for me or take it on myself. i'd rather not pay somebody because of the simple fact that i want to know this car like the back of my hand. but i have no problem paying if i feel it is out of reach.

any and all of your input is appreciated.

    thanks,
    Steve

Steve,if u are mechanicalli inclines as u say u should have no problem doing it urself, its reall not as bad as u think cause i thought it would be as well, this is what ur going to do,unbolt all the oil pan bolts,(make sure u drain the oil)disconnect the motor mounts on each side, its a long bolt that goes through it and is easy to get to,assuming now the car is on jack stands, place the jack under the balancer and lift slowly from the balancer as high as it goes, and then just pull the pan out from the rear,u might have to wiggle it alittle

    Thanks

what about the steering linkage? isnt it right next to the pan? keeping it from coming out? i have a 63 rivi and i had to take off the center link to get mine out, just a thought:grin: are the gs that much different?

well, i found out what the pressure problem was. i still have not dropped the pan though. my oil pressure is right back to where it should be and the car is running great. no more leaks. now, i'm sure you're gonna ask what the problem was with my pressure. honestly it's a little embarrassing. i'll post later what i found when i have some more time. it's time to get my girlfriend and go crusin.
