    Steve,
That's normal for Adrian and the Pachuco. Takes 5 or 6 pages to solve a problem and get things done. Can ya believe it?

Might have to make it 'sticky' haha
But it is very entertaining kind of like a car 'soap opera'
I know I can't wait to see what happens next...maybe the dist IS 180 out,
Maybe its a bad fuel pump, maybe the coil isn't geting 12 volts when cranking, maybe its a simple choke problem, stay tuned on "as the distributor turns"!!!
Hey I'm just joking around-I know how frustrating some of these problems can be,hang in there this problem WILL be solved even if it takes 2 more acts and a surprise ending.

Guys I have a chassis manual and I am still finding it really hard to get the distributor to go back in.
    Any tips?
I am cranking it till it pushes my thumb off and then trying to drop it in with the distributor facing firsing on #1

2 things need to happen and do happen.

    1. your distributor needs to line up near the #1 position on the cap.
    2. your distributor shaft needs to line up with the oil pump shaft.
you may need to use a long screwdriver and slightly rotate the oil pump shaft down in the engine. or vizualize where it needs to be turned to to line up.

This is made difficult as the gear causes the shaft to rotate as you insert it. so it takes a few tries.

I just had this issue in the fall. I was asking myself. Why doesn't the distributor want to drop in another 1/2" DOH need to hit the oil pump correctly.

EDIt: The rotor shaft could be off a tooth. there is enough room most of the time to turn the distributor those few degrees. the goal is to aim the vacuum advance canister toward the battery but a little off of this is ok.

My vacuum canister actually faces the other direction pointing just past the left of the fan if your looking head on at the engine

doh. is the battery on the drivers side on a Riv?

I'm thinking A body. but then yea. toward the pass side of the fan.

Hey Adrian, once you get the #1 cly on 0 degrees on the timing mark (top dead center)on the compression stroke(blows your finger or cork out of the #1 spark plug hole)drop in your dist. having your rotor point to where the #1 termimal is on the cap.
Ok It sounds like you may have this correct so far-posted this first part to review.

Now as far as the dist not dropping all of the way in-
Once you get it placed where you want it,(to the point that it almost all of the way down-all you have to do is bump the starter a few times or even a few more times and it will drop right down(the oil pump shaft will eventually line up with the dist.)
I have done this many times- its never failed.
Make sure you have the cap off when you do this(to avoid starting with no oil pressure).
Hope this helps- and hang in there you will be burning rubber in no time!!

Thanks for all yours guys' advice.
But i still cant get the distributor to drop in!
I have tried lining it up before and putting it in and cranking it and everything!
It feels like it is dropping all the way in and i can even see the that the oil pump little shaft thing moved some.
Am i actually getting it all the way in but thinking im not.
I am getting it to go till what looks like an o ring on the distributor shaft is just on the edge of where it goes in.
I dont know whats wrong but im getting frustrated

Someones trying to tell me that i need a new oil pump. What?

When it is in- there won't be any space between the cover and the dist.
Have a freind lightly push down on the dist while you bump the starter,it really should just go right in-sometimes you need someone to help.
Don't give up dude, you'll get it.

WOW! It's really very simple and easy. Takes only a couple minutes to stab the distributor.

Before I tell you what to do please be aware your oil pump is not turning when you crank without a distributor locked into position! To much and you'll hurt it!

Make sure the crank timing mark is at zero degrees when the piston is up on number one with both intake and exhaust valves closed. This means its number 1 and not 6. You got a 50/50 shot at it right the first time around. Bumb the starter with someones finger in the spark plug hole, they will know for sure when it blows past there finger, HARD.

Line it up right at 10-12 deg timing mark with a 1 1/8" socket on the crank.

Look into the distributor hole, see the top of the oil pump shaft with a slot. This is what the little slot bar on the bottom of the distibutor shaft drops into. Notice how the teeth of the gear are angled. This causes the distributor shaft to rotate about 27degs or so as its dropped into place. You have to turn it counter clockwise that much knowing its going to move as it seats. Don't do anything yet!

Get a very long screw driver and have it ready. With you left hand holding the vacuum canister and you right hand holding the rotor lower the distributor part way in the hole pointing the canister where it should go for most timing movement (radiator cap dirrection) while your right hand faces the tab of the rotor just to the left of the canister (number 1 post on cap). Hold that position still and lift out the distributor, DON'T MOVE THE ROTOR. Look at the bottom to see where the slot position of the oil pump shaft needs to face so that the distributor can sit as you just mocked up, a peice of tap works or a finger mark or just eyeball it. You'll notice it's the close to the rotor position.

Stick the long screw driver in the hole and set the oil pump shaft slot to line up with the bottom of the distributor shaft when in position. NOW it's time to drop you distributor into position holding it the same way as before. Your right hand will turn the rotor counter clockwise 27degs or so before you touch the gear so that when the cam gear meshes it turns it back to line up with the oil pump shaft slot. If you miss don't panic! Your just a tooth off one way or another just try again moving it slightly more or less until it drops that last 3/8" to bottom out. Wow! It's in! The rotor is pointing exactly where the #1 post of the cap needs to be so move the distributor til this happens. You timing it by sight right now. Put on you cap noticing some point of reference of the rotor conductor direction. Make sure the cap hold downs are pointed outward so the cap can seat. Turn them will pushing down until cap secured. Check your reference line of sight and make sure the coil to #1 line is still pointed correctly. Lightly tighten the hold down with a 9/16" wrench so the distributor can just move by hand only.

Put on your wires starting with #1 (closest to the rotor tab). Clockwise from there 18436572.

The car will start now. Use a timing light for final adjustment.
