Do I have a limited slip differential?

I was doing a burnout in the school parking lot once and it started spinning the left tire first, and then switched over to the right side. I was suprised because I always just get traction on the right.

My friend with a 69gto said that i might have a posi with worn gears. Is that true?

Difficult to say...the right rear on an open differential (or bad posi) will usually be the first to spin because the rotation of the driveshaft tends to lift the right tire, thus lessening traction on that side. If for any reason the right tire has better traction than the left, then the opposite will happen and you end up smoking the left. The easiest way to find out what's up is to pull the cover off for inspection. At least it's a good opportunity to replace the gear lube while you're there. Good luck!

    posi not/or not

That is correct... What happened is the right tire got hot enough or you transfered the weight of the car . The tire probably started getting hot and got traction then the spider gear transfered the power to the other side( the side with the least amount of traction...lol. My friend use to go to the track and do that in the burn out area heat one then stop and heat the other...was goofy but worked. I would have to say it is an open rear diff. Jim
