Some time ago, an old man neighbour approached me whilst I was working on my car saying my alarm went off in the dead of night. I didn't know what to say, other than I didn't have an alarm- but for his own piece of mind, I would disconnect the battery on my 1980 LeSabre. I noticed soon after that the original quad horn option horns had lost some tones and was down to one! Last night I got awoken at 2am by a different neighbour.. The car's horn was stuck on. I have just disconnected the battery for now until I have time to look into it. It has suddenly got very cold here without prompt, and I don't doubt the internal horn ring might now be disfunctional. But to test it, I need to get the thing off.. How do I do this? I have the same steering wheel as is pictured below - Thank you muchly in advance!:
When you get it off look and see if you can find the flat metal push retainer that holds the center with the medallion on. They are used on plastic that breaks and lets the metal retainer fall down and make the connection to ground . Then the horn blows . Make sure they are all intact
I have yet to actually disasemble (to many cars on the go!). I have unhoocked the four blowers and hooked the battery back up so that I can use it. Thanks for the responses. The horn was always quite sensetive! Infact, upon quick testing, I can hear the contacts connecting on the very slightest touch! Are they typically this sensetive?
Sorry for late reply. The horn is off, after I had to take it off. I removed all horn connections, but I totally forgot about the fact that a relay would be operated- the battery had died because it had presumably run this relay for many days. Where is this relay? As there is no fuse associated with it according to my owner's manual. And.. The horn unit all looks good. Everything is in place- All i can think of is that the foam membrane between the two pieces of metal, inside is old and probably brittle.. I also think that the cold weather of late had contracted the metal making it bend and make the contact. Which is why I think the above replacement (put some new foam in) would be necessary in order to retain the function of this particular horn set up??
I've threaded a bunch of zip ties between the two sheets of metal.. Seems a bit harder to operate the horn now.. As intended..
