I had always thought GM avoided the use of the letter "I" in casting codes due to a chance of being confused with the number 1. Yet on my 72 distributer for my ragtop, there is the dist number 1112109 (if I remember correctly) then the code what looks like 1I9, which would be Sept 9, 1971 which would mean its not original as my car was built the fifth week of August, 1971.

It is quite hard to read and there may be another 1 in front, which would be 1H9, that would make more sense....thats why I am trying figure out if am looking at an H or a 1I.....if GM didn't use the I then its solved.

I figured this forum was the best for documentation info...

    Thanks

I don't think '1' was used in date codes, only part #s.

    HTH, and sorry so late!

It's interesting you should bring that up Tim, my GS was built in Oshowa Canada, the letter designation on the VIN number is "I", technically, but the actual VIN tag itself posts it as a "1". So there is at least some truth to what you say. Gotta wonder why they would choose a letter that is almost identical to a number and then have to figure out how to differentiate between them? :puzzled:

They should have just used a Z.

But that wouldn't help as far as part numbers go though.
