Re: Dealer code, Waye say's not available ?

In my as yet unsuccessful effort to come up with shipping charges to Honolulu...I found a GMAD build sheet (not mine) that filled-in some puzzle pieces...notably that my selling dealer Schuman Carriage is in Zone 79...specifically 79-908. Sheet also shows car trucked to Oakland/SeaTrain for embarkation, with Shuman listed as dealer 79-288. This interesting tidbit of using 2 different dealer codes I "assume" is GM accounting's way of tracking separate land/sea components of shipping charges. Unfortunately (for me) from Fremont, not Flint, and no actual chgs...but info may be useful in this "Zone 79" discussion...:Do No:

Owner's Manual w/intact POP...in absence of any kind of build paperwork, as '71 owner I feel very fortunate.

Regarding "Zone 79"...wonder if GM used as catchall, or possibly "zone" for any car off-continent (non-truck transport)...surely someone from GM remembers...:Do No:

That is very fortunate ! Yoda say's that '71 POP are rarely If ever for the correct car. U'd think that Sloan would have that info. But I'm sure if they did Mark would know by now. Found out the previous owner has moved, but I'm still on the Hunt..

"Yoda say's that '71 POP are rarely If ever for the correct car."

That is not quite correct. What I said was the engine codes on 71 POP's are often wrong. I have seen many examples where the engine code was left as the base 350 when the car was in fact a 455 or Stage 1, and has been proven as such by looking at other factory paperwork & the actual parts/date codes on the cars. The people entering some of these POP codes were obviously sloppy and did not change everything.

However, the other codes on the 71 POPs do seem to be correct.

Also, the general thought is the Zone 79 codes were used by GM to designate off-shore bound vehicles. GM had at least 2 embarkation points (east & west coast) and the cars were shipped there before going to the appropriate countries/dealerships. That is why you see the "Charged to dealer 79-001 and shipped to dealer 79-011" codes of Gary Foster's old Stage 1 car.

GM also did the same thing for in-country vehicles. Sometimes the cars were sent to a holding area/large dealership and the local dealerships "picked-up" the cars from there. You see the same Charge/Shipped info on these cars, but with local zone numbers.

Early on decoded 7 POP lines...all good :TU: Have to wonder if inconsistencies due in part to a PO using (ala eBay?) manual from different car...:Do No:

Did you decode a build sheet for this car ? Is that how you have this information ?

    Thanks again,

Re: Dealer code, Waye say's not available ?

Years ago The GSCA had their National event in Columbus and at the Restoration Seminar for that year I brought the decoded sheet from Gary Foster's Production Order Body Final and Wayne Roberts brought a record of his decoded microfilm for the same car. This was the first "showing" of Wayne's info.

Until then I was the only game in town with decoding buildsheets, so we decided to "decode" the same car and see how close our info was. The 2 decodes were exact, with the added benefit of Wayne's info having the dealer codes.

It verified both types of factory info and the people went nuts.

I got a copy of Wayne's info & he got a copy of mine. The dealer numbers came from Wayne's info.

I have an entire library full of Wholesale Car Order Forms, Dealership ID numbers, Factory Bulletins, Inter-office memos, Factory Engine books, Assembly manuals, Factory Buildsheet decoding books, part#/date codes from various original cars, Sloan decodes, Wayne Roberts decodes, buildsheet decodes, etc. When people ask for info I dig it out of the appropriate books and answer the questions I can.

Re: Dealer code, Waye say's not available ?

Don't have build info...and since it's a '71, no official source. :( What I have started with Owner's Manual...there are 7 lines on POP. Lines 1,2,3 (owner info) and 7 (dealer info) dealer applied. Lines 4,5,6 factory stamped. Assembly Manual (for '71, page 1-4.1) breaks down line 4,5,6 codes and explains a couple. Much of rest found in general/engine/trans/rear Sections in Chassis Service Manual. Leaves a couple code#s I don't have...but...

Internet gave me...Wholesale Car Order Form to reconstruct option list...GMAD build sheet for dealer code, understanding shipping, and shippers used (Matson/SeaTrain)...Schuman Carriage Co, (interesting story in itself)...owner, prof at U of HI...Google even had residence pic. Currently trying to find shipping charges so I can have window sticker made...

I skipped that year in Ohio. What kind of dealer in Germany was it shipped to ? I have one more place to check for a build sheet. Cross your fingers. I'm on streak of 5 for 5:grin:

PS I miss Paul Harvey being a fellow Oklahoman.

"What kind of dealer in Germany was it shipped to ?"

I have no further info about that. All we know is the car was sent overseas and the buyer was supposedly a military man living in Germany.

I don't know if there is anything else on the build sheet or car that could help but I now own that car and also have the build sheet.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
