Your work on the heads is gorgeous no doubt. However, its very hard if not impossible to tell how well the machine work is without a flow bench. If you were doing very small tweaks and such then you could probably tell by pictures. So easily on head work you can go from great or outstanding numbers and do that "well maybe if I take out a little more" and then your numbers plummet like pushing a rock off a ledge.....or so I am told. But gorgeous work none the less and I hope for the best!!
What you've done looks very NICE Alex. Problem is without a flow bench it's almost impossible to tell. I can say that what you've done in the combustion chamber by cleaning up the "Eyebrows" DOES help. These "Nails" are sosososo deficient in the breathing department that just about anything you do will make an improvement. In the case of these heads bigger is NOT always better. The roof of the intake & side wall are where some improvements can be made. On the exhaust the roof being raised helps also. DON'T remove the upward turned lips at the bottom/exit of the exhaust port as these help to direct the exhaust into the manifold. The short turn radius is very important. The more gradual & smoothed/rounded/contoured the better. Your better off to flow less with NO turbulence than to flow more WITH turbulence. The intake manifold is another area where improvements can be made. The BIGGEST thing is you don't want to lose the velocity built into these heads, although porting will lessen it, but not in a bad way. I could type for DAYS & never give ALL the info needed. Again, a flow bench is the ONLY way to tell for sure. Tom T.
Great work, time and dedication to you and your thread, wish I had this before I ported my heads but it was sti an experience and fun drinking beer , grinding and smelling like a grease monkey as my wife puts it. So sorry you broke thru the intake while porting, this was one of my most of fears, I broke thru on a exhaust port but on the bolt boss that's not. Biggie, but gave me a big wake up to slow down look and be carefull , on the exhaust manifolds I ported the same was and deleted the heater valve but also had the manifolds ceramichromed and thermal heat coatings sprayed on the inside reducing heat even more. Really great work thanks a lot Alex
Thanks for your kind words! You're welcome! Here's another thread which turned out to be more related to my Nailhead head porting http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?293103-Nailhead-porting-videos-on-Youtube This thread is gonna get a final update soon, though the engine was finished few months ago.
Old thread, but I stumbled on another site where Nick (whatever) had posted it. It still has the pictures! https://www.diyauto.com/manufacture...lds/da-nailhead-adventures-by-whatever/page/1
Thanks Walt! It's ironic cause a few weeks ago I was thinking about this guy, wondering what happened to him, how he's making out. I'd love to now what the average Russian "Kid(? he was fairly young) " thinks of the world today..
Nice find from the past and thanks for the link with pics! Wow this guy's knowledge and work is amazing and being from Russia just wow
