I got the heads back from the machine shop yesterday. I was taping the ports off to paint it this morning when I saw a metal part hanging out in the water jacket port. At first I thought the guys at the machine shop dropped something in there but under closer examination, it's supposed to be there. I looked at the other head and didn't see it at first. Then I noticed the same free floating part is in the other head. It appears the first one I noticed had somehow been turned around and is now stuck where it shouldn't be. I imagine it directs the water somehow. I can't seem to get the piece out to re-install it correctly. Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks.

Certainly sounds odd and I've never heard or noticed such a thing. Can you take a picture? Are you sure it isn't casting flash that just got broken loose?

I've seen a loose rod looking things in the cooling passages of two different heads.

I have seen that too in early engines. Something left over during casting

The guy from the machine shop called back and said he thought it was probably a piece left from the casting. I'll take take some better pictures and post them soon. [IMG]

I see these all the time, just knock 'em out. If you can't rattle them out, use a chisel to break them.
