What letter codes are correct for these cars? I have one out of this 70 Skylark, and it's original. Would love to get the right one in there.

I wonder if the blue 70 automatic with the white top has the correct tanks in it?

Depends on AC or non AC.

CF / IA for a 70 GS 350 with AC would be correct for a non AC 70 stage 1

XS / IA for a 70 stage 1 with AC is what I recall

Mike has a 70 stage one automatic with air which he bought from me @ 2005. I think it’s all correct.

    This is not that car.

The radiator I have that came out of the Skylark is CF IA. I wonder if he has another radiator that came with this car...it was a total basket case and stripped to its bones when purchased.

A Radiator with CF & IA tanks could be at least 2 different radiators, depending on the core size. One of the Radiator Tags for this configuration is an "SB", which has a 2-row core, and another is an "SJ" which has a 3-row core. I don't remember if there was a third one.

"XS" & "IA" are an "SW" tag

Yep, I get that. I think he has another car at his location that he could pull the radiator from and use for this particular project.

    Adam,

My 70 Stage 1 with A/C came with the SW radiator - XS/IA tanks.

...from everything I've read, Stage 1 Option included SW (HD) radiator which superseded trans and/or A/C considerations...

Actually most Stage1 came with the SJ without AC. SW was for heavy duty cooling or AC. It’s very confusing but from what I have seen the SW was less common laying around now. I found and SW and had it re-cored. I put it in my 70 GSX 4 speed without AC and man that engine ran cool,

...thanks Dave for that follow-up. Biggest documentation-related problem I've encountered was Buick's rather loose use of terms "Heavy Duty" and "Extra Heavy Duty," especially as relates to '70 Wholesale Order Form Option A1 which sez "H.D. Rad" in description, whereas Option I7 Heavy Duty Cooling sez "Extra H.D. Rad" and "N.A. with A1 on GS 455" which implies A1 included the extra hdo_O. Buick kinda sorta tried to clarify on '71 order form by re-wording I7 to replace "Extra HD" with "HD" and add Option I3 Extra Heavy Duty Radiator, but then again in description say "N.A. with A1":eek:o_O. I've been trying to untangle this for a while now, and each time think I've got it right...

I was always stumped by that as well. Oldsmobile had a similar situation. Some 70 442 had 4 core radiators and some 3. They actually had a special core support. My 70 w/30 what EXTRA heavy duty cooling because it had 3.91 gears. Parts stores always ordered me the wrong water pump for that car. The correct one had a longer nose. I think I solved the issue by ordering the one for AC even though car did not have AC.
