Great tune from '61, heard everywhere there was a Jukebox or a radio station. Safaris "Image Of A Girl"

...Ink Spots called their variant "Top & Bottom." A '30s-'40s group I heard into '50s, thanks to radio songs "lasting" longer.

Korrie's posted some doo-wop I've never heard, good stuff that never made it beyond recording city/region. Sad, recalls payola scandal. Overall though, a great time to have had a front row seat to musical evolution and birth of rock-n-roll...

And the Embers--more Beach Music than Doo Wop, but roots can be heard!

The Embers I have known for a long time. They are from Raleigh, NC. Bobby Tomlison still lives here. They played for a dance we had in either 63 or 64. I saw many greats at their first real club on Davie Street. We had one of our Juke boxes in there.

Here is one of my Embers favorites, "Far Away Places", with Jackie Gore singing lead:

Neat, Jim. I was at school in CH from '64-'72 (slow learner...) and spent my last 2 years in HS on the Peninsula, so we had all these great bands...remember A Night with Daddy G/ Quarter to Three by The Church Street Five and Gary U.S. Bonds from Norfolk? They used to play at our school dances (usually after Friday night FB games)? They also played, along with all the great bands back then, at a small venue called "The Original Club" that we went to as well--underage and all...we just loved to dance to the tunes.

When I went to college in '64, we started a band and played a bit around, so we ran into many of the local players back then. Played many frat parties at school (CH) and ran into new players like James Taylor (his dad was Dean of the UNC Medical School at the time) as well as the Tams, The Embers, The Isley Brothers, etc., who were also on the NC/SC/Beach circuit back then. Played the clubs in Raleigh, Charlotte, MANY VA and NC HS proms, etc.

Went to Myrtle Beach with my last band, One Nite Stand (I would have named us Cheap Trick if I would have thought of it!). Our agent, Beach Club Promotions, was run by Cecil Corbett and his assistant Wilson. Brought us down to his club there to play between sets for the Four Tops, The Temptations, and other acts during the summers. I had hired music majors for this band--long story of lessons learned--and these big acts travelled with one or two musicians and we filled in the rest of their band for their performances. We played all their songs anyway, so...

Funny story--ran into the Four Tops at Joe Namath's club in Ft. Lauderdale (Bachelors III) one nite many years later and they remembered me--must have been my long hair back then, I guess, or the great musicians we provided for their sets.

We also got to play at the Pavillion in MB--lots of Beach Music in our repertoire back then. Never forget the "cruising" cars that went by the Pavillion all night. Different times--many had confederate flags tucked around their car trunks. Long time ago...

Cecil was going fishing one day and wanted to drive my new car ('71 Corvette) so we went over to the boat and I met "some guy that just started with Beach Club but is gonna be good" according to Cecil--name of Jimmy Buffett. On his live "You Had to be There" album he sings "It's all Cecil's fault" on one chorus of Margaritaville.

Great days, great music, great (innocent) times.

    Cheers!

I recall Beach Club Promotions very well. Do you recall Speedo Jordan who ran the Cats Eye or the Other Eye Clubs in Raleigh?

I can still see Joe Pope slaying the crowd at all those clubs.

I went to the Pavillion, Cazy Zacks and those places at OD and Myrtle Beach.

Before Buffet was well known he played the Frog an Nightgown all the time.

I saw the Tops and Temps many times. Shirells, Barbara Lewis and many more.

I saw jerry B play many times. When he did "For my Precious Love" in 58, he was still with the Impressions. I have that on a 45.
