Korrie, I turned my Marine buddies onto B J Thomas during my time in and the song " Billy & Sue " seemed to be the most popular by far ! Many went to the PX and bought his eight track! he owes me !
I've seen him live a couple times the front row here in Mayfield hts Ohio and at the Cleveland "Moon dog ball "
Darlene Love and the Blossoms —He’s Sure the Boy That I Love (1962) Spector falsely credited this song to The Crystals, another of his groups.
...Crystals were his hottest group and he was first and foremost a promoter. From stories, most every studio swapped people in sessions, it was "da bizness." For me, an interesting part of the music is recognizing vocal/instrumental backups, and sometimes, as with Love in this case, singing lead...
Dionne Warwick--Don't Make Me Over (1963) By the style you can tell this is obviously yet another Burt Bacharach and Hal David masterpiece. In about 1968 Dionne shows for a concert at N.C. State, shoots pool with the guys in the student union, walks over to Reynolds Coliseum and sings it just like this:
Little Richard— While lot of Shakin Going On (1963). I saw Little Richard in concert in Myrtle Beach about 10-20 years ago. He was so bad off that a big guy carried him in like a ventriloquist’s dummy and sat him on the piano bench. But, once there, he could still play and sing (but he talks too much.)
In Telstar the keyboard player was using one of the early music synthesizers. But they were in England. Meanwhile in the USA we had our own genius inventor and keyboard player, Max Crook, developing his own home built music synthesizer. And in 1964 I sat in a seat in Dorton Arena just to hear him play his “musitron”while a friend of his sang a song. It sounded like this: Choreography courtesy of Larry Hymowitz.
Dorsey Burnette—Tall Oak Tree (1960) He was Johnny’s surviving brother. He died at 49 while Johnny drown at age 30.
