Gun laws vary between states. Its called reciprocity. Some states recognize other states licenses, others do not. And what even worse is they change from time to time. So even though one state honored another states license, that may not necessarily be true next month. For example, your Ohio resident CCW Is not honored in Illinois among other states.

NY doesn't honor any other states license. In fact, the gun laws are different within the state of NY. If I lived above Westchester, I would get a full carry. But because I live in Suffolk county, the county puts a restriction on my license so I can only carry to and from the range only. And even if I had a full carry, its not good within NYC. I can be arrested.

I carry non resident permits in Utah, Florida and Connecticut, which means I can legally carry in approx. 36 states except my own:rolleyes: Imagine having to maintain 12 different driver's licenses in order to drive cross country?

So in answer to your question, yes. You would be arrested and charged with a felony if you stepped foot in NY.

And to get a fully carry where I am in NY, I would need to show cause. NY is one of only 8 "may issue" states. I would need documented evidence of death threats, or I could prove I handled more than $3k a week in cash. In which case I would need to show 12 months of weekly deposits. And even then, it would be a "business carry" meaning it would only be good during business hours.

The only other way to get a full carry in NYC is to be well off so you can "grease the wheels" so to speak

Yes and no. The Firearms Owners Protection Act allows for the transport of lawfully obtained firearms when passing through a state that may otherwise prohibit it, but there are many caveats to the provision. Having it on your person in a state without reciprocity with your ccw permit issuing state would be a no no, there are certain storage guidelines you must follow, and some gray areas to be aware of regarding stops etc (i.e. staying at a hotel overnight, visiting a landmark and such). Also, some states/municipalities treat the federal provision as an "affirmative defense", meaning it can only be raised after an arrest, so your already in a precarious spot.

Anyway, I'm not an attorney and dont play one on TV, so do your homework before crossing those lines. But there are some protections for interstate transport of firearms, albeit with some arguably tricky guidelines to follow.

Good luck with that Riley:D Let me know how that works out for you! :p The Firearm Owner Protection Act is a law in the United States. It doesn't apply when you leave the US and enter NY.

All joking aside....well, not really.....it would be a bad scene. You'd get arrested. Then you would have to plead your case in court with your lawyer. After $25k in lawyer fees and 6 months of your life, you may get off with a not guilty verdict, not not.

Oh, I know you guys don't play by the same rules as those of us in free states ( :D ), I was just pointing out there are indeed protections on the books for certain cases. Not that it'd make it painless by any means.

I wonder if that would apply to an off duty police officer from another state as well?

I'll really make your eyes glaze over....

So to buy a handgun, I go to the gun store and pick out something. I pay for the gun but I cant take it with me. I only get a receipt. I have to take the receipt to Suffolk police headquarters and obtain a purchase order for $5. Now depending on where the gun store is, that could be a 40 mile ride. The pistol licensing bureau (PLB) doesn't take cash or credit cards. They ONLY take checks. So I get the PO and then have to go back to the gun store (another 40 mike trip in some cases) and pick up the gun. But, Im not done yet! I have 20 days to return to the PLB. So now I go back to the PLB (another trip) with the new handgun and hand it over to them so they can register it and put it on my license and drive home. The PLB is in a town "Yaphank" so we call it the "Yaphank shuffle". You have to do that for every gun you buy. So sometimes its easier to buy 2 or 3 at a time:D So my CCW license has my name, address and all the guns I own on the back with serial numbers. So God forbid I lose my wallet and it falls into the wrong hands.....

No, there's some federal law...HR 218? ...that if your a retired PO, you have national reciprocity. Am I right Riley?

You are correct Sir. There are some limitations to it as well (isn't there always??!!) like suppressors, going into state/federal buildings, etc, but I'm not a leo so I never read that far into it since it didn't apply to me. But as far as just carrying a handgun, with the proper leo credentials there is "reciprocity" nationwide.

agreed, Pennsylvania is not as bad as I thought, NY SUCKS.... Our mayor is trying his best to catch up though.

My company does not allow firearms to be carried in company vehicles or on our jobsites. How can a large corporation overrule the constitution of the United States?

Lordy, I'm also glad I live in Montana. Cake walk here. We have 1 hour courses and a background check with 3 references. We all get Utah cc licenses because of the many states that honor Utah's, including Montana.....if I went to a pawn shop or gun store right now, I'd be out the door with my new pretty thing in 15 minutes.

Yep, Ohio's pretty friendly to gun owners overall. CCW permit is an 8 hour course (6 hours class room, 2 hours range time), renewed every 5 years (no retaking the course needed), then you drop off the paperwork at your sheriff's department and wait anywhere from a day to a few weeks for them to do a pretty extensive background check. As far as buying, if you have your ccw you dont have to go through the full background check. You still fill out the 4473, but your permit is photocopied and a box is checked and you go on your way. Picked up a few new 22's the other day (ruger american threaded barrel and Ruger mark iv 22/45 tactical as suppressor hosts since those are allowed in Ohio as well) and it was a 5 minute process. If you don't have your ccw or choose not to use it on the form, it's just the standard 4473 and nics check, still only takes 10-15 minutes as long as you don't get flagged.

NY just passed a few new gun laws and more are coming down the pike.

Right now, if a school wants to hire armed personnel, it can. One bill that just passed is to make it illegal for any teacher to carry a gun in school. They also passed a bill that makes it illegal for schools to hire any armed resource officer. Because the schools need to remain soft targets:rolleyes:

Ny is trying to get a "red flag" law passed. Red flag laws mean that if someone thinks your a "danger", thy can contact the police, tell them your a nut job and the police go to your house and confiscate all your guns without any due process. Ever hear of "swatting'? Then you need to prove your innocence to get them back. Good luck with that btw..

Georgia get real, you were only a few votes away from becoming New York south. Get ready. Most people don’t give a crap if they confiscate.
