anyone coating thier headers with ceramic coating like jet hot or airborn? it will be a set of turbo headers. looking to do them silver. do they chip? fade and how durable are they? Thanks paul 66larkgs turbo 401 nailhead
I've got Jet Hot on my exhaust tubes from the factory iron manifolds all the way back to the tips. It's been great so far. They don't stain as easily and clean up better when somethign does get on them. I know of several people who won't install an exhaust system without it. The original reason for ceramic coating an exhaust was to reduce the amount of heat lost as the exhaust pulse moved downstream of the port to improve overall power. What they discovered was that it also increasd the durability and longevity of the exhaust system to a point where the systems now last 3 or 4 times longer than they used to. And they have now been able to measure an increase in torque and horsepower at the wheels as well. The original racing applications were in the Top Fuel and Top Alcohol classes of drag racing in both cars and boats. Now many other classes and recing series use similar technology.
A friend of mine now owns Jet Hot. He is an automotive person and an engineer. They do good work. They have locations in AZ, Ok and NC.
If your headers temps get too hot, they might lose their shine (if you get the Hi-Lustre). My headers lost their shine after I overheated them when my timing/mixture was off. Since you have a turbo, you might want to ask Jet Hot about the shine lasting. It's purely cosmetic though, the coating is still there even after the abuse I put them through , it's just more of a flat satin look now than the beautiful polished chrome look it originally had.
I had Jet Hot do my 455 headers from TAP before they were shipped to me. Really great job! They really do clean up easy. I basically just use Dawn w/water and then rinse and dry!! lol. Sometimes I amaze myself at how humerous I can be~~ Mark
I had a set of headers and crossover pipe for one of my Turbo cars coated inside and out by Jet-Hot With their 2000 black coating over ten years ago. It REALLY lowers the underhood temperature! Still looks GOOD. I had previously had them up to a mild glow at night "playing around" back in the day when I was young, showing off. I don't even think they will even begin to glow now;the coating is THAT good and efficient. I am STILL impressed!
i am going to send out my turbo headers to jet hot.. what do you think, black or that aluminum look? i am thinking the aluminum look but worried about color changing.. i attached a picture of the motor. dont mind the bodywork dust.. Paul 66larkgs turbo 401 nailhead
The aluminum look is nice, but only good to 1300 degrees. Their 2000 and 2500 degree coatings come in grey, black and even colors. Some quick Google research suggests headers that glow red are in the 1000 to 1500 degree range. Best to talk to tech support for their recommendations. My old 79 turbo Regal headers would glow red after some enthusiastic driving. Surprised the heck out of me the first time I saw it!:eek2:
My headers and crossover were Jet Hot 2000 BLACK; I already had a downpipe that was high temp silver on stainless steel from manufacturer. The coating on the D/P blisterred off near the wastegate area. Don't know what type coating it was, but based on this combo, I'd shy away from the silver. Just my 2$ worth (inflation, ya know, LOL)
