    '63 Buick LeSabre is SOLD.

PLEASE scroll down and read all posts in this thread.

No time for a project? Get in this Buick and DRIVE. I am the 4th owner!
Sad to part with this '63 two door hardtop Buick LeSabre. This is a super reliable cruiser that took us safely and comfortably on the whole length of Route 66 from Chicago to LA in 2014, without a single hiccup. Its got some real nice touches to make it unique and enjoyable including some sweet custom pin striping by the master Ron Myers, applied at the Stray Kat 500 en route to Arizona in 2014. I've added some improvements for driving comfort and safety, but its mostly stock, without body modifications. It is a numbers matching car, with 92,000 original miles on the chassis and appx. 35,000 on the total professional rebuild of the venerable 401 Nailhead engine. Triple SunPro gauges - Oil, water and volts, though all of the idiot lights work. Repainted the original color scheme, and has Buick Wildcat bucket seats and console with Buick Factory tachometer (it works). Interior is XLNT. Back up lights work, Speed-Minder works, all interior lights work, needs a heater core, original one finally died. I've installed power disk brakes (Booster Dewey /Scarebird) on the front, new springs (with a single coil removed to lower the stance slightly), new rear brakes, upper and lower ball joints and new shocks all around. The car has power steering, dual exhaust, excellent factory green-tinted glass and xlnt chrome. Its had a Buick factory 4 barrel manifold installed with Edelbrock 4 barrel carb and an Edelbrock electronic ignition module in the distributor. Brand new Harrison ($400) radiator, hoses, belts, FlowKooler water pump and NAPA thermostat, shroud and 5 blade clutch fan so runs COOL in the summer even driving up long pulls in the mountains. As stated, super reliable and runs great. Uses zero oil. Buick Road Wheels and excellent whitewall radials installed, brand new radial spare in the trunk. Original jack and lug wrench. I've got the original factory owners manual and the pair of big, thick Buick service manuals for it.
Just under 28,000 2 door sport coupes were built in 1963, making this a fairly scarce car, and a pretty damned nice two-door hardtop for the $$. Firewall tag info:

That is a good price, the X-frame small block Chevy version of this car in this kind of condition is almost twice that price! And this one has a Nailhead v8 in it!

Can I ask where the car came from?
It looks identical to the one I built 8-9 years ago. The car originally came with a bench seat, and when I had interior redone, I had the wildcat buckets upholstered to match so as to have the option of how to set it up. The buckets won. The inserts for the seats, I ordered special for the car and the upholsterer installed it for me.
I also did a full rebuild on the 401 to bottom and added the 4 barrel intake with the edlebrock carb.
I bought the car from an elderly couple in Ames Iowa and it was all original and rust free. It needed some paint work due to a spot on the hood where something had dripped on it and left a spot.
Great car that is solid and drove well

Mark, I went through my file and this is that car alright. Your name is listed as previous owner on the Ohio Title. I bought it from a dealer in Jefferson, WI and they apparently got it from the guy you sold it to. You did a great job on the interior. The car came factory with no cooling fan shroud, just a plate on top to keep your fingers out and a dinky 4 blade fixed fan. It heated up quickly pulling hills or idling in traffic on hot days. I put in a new Harrison radiator, a FlowKooler water pump and a shroud, small pulleys and 5 blade clutch fan out of a '62 LeSabre that was equipped with AC. Solved the problem pronto and runs cool as a cucumber now under all conditions. The '62 AC radiator also has a 90 in the top inlet tube to put the top radiator hose out of the way for an AC compressor, should one decide to add that to the car.
I rebuilt the front end and added power disks up front that really improved the drivability.
This car has been a blast to own. As I've said, we've driven it on Route 66, end to end, CHI-LA on Route 66 and all over the Southwest. We've put about 10,000 trouble-free miles on it since we bought it. It runs GREAT. Everywhere we go, we get the "Man, my dad had one of these" and the "I learned to drive in a 4 door one of these" and the older guys, in their 80's, really love this car, because, of course, they had one and miss it when they're driving their new plastic egg-econoboxes that all look the same.

I'm happy to have found some (more) history on the ol' Buick. Did you keep any of the receipts? I'd love to have them for the file. Please PM me if so.

This really is a no-BS solid car. I was going to put AC in it, but found a '67 Pontiac Grand Prix that I fell in love with. I know - Blasphemy! But this is a lot of iron in my little shop so I'm still looking for a good home for this LeSabre. I'll consider all reasonable offers. Thanks for the post Mark! Hunter

I can confirm, the engine was new, top to bottom, I don't do half assed when it comes to engine rebuilds on these cars, and it really ran great. The shop I use for engine rebuilds has built 5-6 nailheads for me and know what they are doing. All parts for the rebuild we bought from Carmine Faso, a guy who knows these engines well. Stock rebuild, bored 30 over, with all new internals and bearings. That rebuild was well over $4000 back then. It also has 35k more miles and 8-9 years on it than when I had it, so I can't confirm how it was taken care of, or what was or has been done to it. I know Matt drove it quite a bit and did like the car
The radiator shroud was standard for the non AC version , hence the tiny top over the fan shroud
All the receipts went to PO when he bought it.
I had seen it at the dealer in WI, and had called and was in the process of getting a car ready for the trip up to trade for the 63, when they called to say it was sold. :-(

Who ever buys the car really is getting a solid nice old 63 that was a pleasure to drive. I am glad you have enjoyed it

Mark, I REALLY appreciate the information on this LeSabre. Its not often that one can substantiate the origin and ownership history of a 54 year old car. It does not surprise me one bit that it was rebuilt top to bottom. It STILL runs great and doesn't use a drop of oil. Starts right up, fast idle when cold, bump the accelerator and it drops to that smooth Nailhead lope. It pulls hills like a locomotive and was an absolute dream to drive through the Missouri Ozarks on Route 66.
I apologize for buying it "out from under" you. Its no surprise you wanted it back. The WI dealer really didn't know much about it except that "somebody spent a lot of money on it". He told me it had a Wildcat interior and engine installed. Probably thought that because of the factory Buick 4 barrel intake manifold. I was fussing on it one day and looked at the numbers on top of the engine and thought, wait a minute, that's the VIN. Sure enough. Numbers matching car. We have loved it and have only improved it while we owned it.
If you want it back I'll drive it out to you without hesitation.
    Kind regards, Hunter

I have considered it, and kicked the idea around after seeing this posting, believe me when I say this, I do like the car and always have.

I am leaving in the morning to go look at some Buicks that are for sale here in Iowa, curious to see if one of them is needing a new home :)

We may talk again on this.

Excuse my lack of knowledge, I am an "A" body guy, haven't owned a big Buick.
So, what transmission would be in this 63?

This weekend we took the Buick out on a 300-mile round-trip to Holbrook, AZ for their annual Route 66 Festival and Gunslinger car show. The LeSabre ran great, without issue (as expected). We took first place in the '60-'79 Stock Car class. Relatively small car show, but still a huge compliment to the Buick as there were a lot of really nice cars there....

    No.
Dynaflow does not shift gears, instead it has variable pitchtorque converter .
Put it in Drive , and it's the smoothest ride you'll ever drive.
Low gear in Dynaflow is for pulling down a house

    Hunter,
If you keep bringing this back to the top, I may just have to sell the 66 I bought and buy this one back.
The car really is super nice

Mark, you did one helluva nice job on this car. That paint, interior and engine rebuild you performed is worth what I'm asking for the whole car. Plus I've added a couple grand worth of front disk brakes, suspension and cooling system.
It really is as straight as it looks. Just drove it over the mountains to Prescott for the Watson Lake Car show. Runs flawlessly. Everyone loves this car, now if I can just get some lucky guy to get out his wallet!

    Have you tried eBay?

You can set your reserve to your asking price you know. It might sell there, a flipper would probably buy it to sell for more $$ and you would probably get more than you're asking? GL with the sale, very nice car!
