I want to thank you for your reply but you know how close those valves are to the edge of the wall of the head, heck it may work. I think I will do just what you suggested earlier and that is make the holes bigger and that has been the consensus of some of you guys that have done some of this work. I have a .015 gasket so that is probably what I will try to keep the top of the intake from getting too high on the head. This is where it looks close on the port opening.

I also agree with you on the fact that the intake is made to be adjusted for each engine being built and it has to be built to fit a totally stock engine, forgot about that part, brainfart.

I have pistons that were fly cut to accept the TA510 cam when the engine was built in the beginning. I don't know if this will help in figuring out this thing but I do remember being told there was about .100 of room left between the piston and the intake valve. The exhaust had about .090 of room between the piston and valve. This may be reversed I can't remember right now. This may give some insight on how much compression I have, Or where the piston is at.

I do have a 4 door Skylark Custom at my brothers house with a 70 350 it is supposed to have 70000 miles on the car. The body and underneath is not rusted at all, clean interior. Should take the 350 out of that and put that 455 in there I have collecting dust in the garage. That would be a real sleeper.

I want to Thank everyone here that has posted here to help me out with this. This installation should have been a no brainer but as we all know with high performance parts you have to do some adjusting to make them work.

I finally got all the bolt holes larger and can now get them all in with a .032 gasket in place. It took all day and installing the intake about 10-15 times to get it right. The ports line up at the top of the head so looking good.

This was a great idea. I used this but I did not have 2 sided tape available so I used Scotch tape and put it on the ends of the gasket between the two from bolt holes and put a piece in the center at the exhaust crossover.

I put that intake on and off at least 10 times and even tightened down the intake on several occasions to cheek the fit. That gasket never moved or got out of alignment.

Just clean off the area on the head with some acetone to get the grease and oil off and the tape will stick to it. I would think the little piece at the exhaust crossover would just melt and dissipate or burn up from the exhaust. But you can get away with just taping the outside corners of the gasket to the head. Between the two bolt holes in the front there is enough room to put the tape on and not be in the engine.

    Great Idea

Glad it helped. I've used that trick at times, other times I used a few tiny dots of weatherstrip adhesive to accomplish the same.

Hey Guy, was doing some innerweb searching and found what those bottled octane boosters are made out of with a couple different cheap and easy ways to up the octane rating of pump gas.

    I started this thread about an octane additive and it made me more curious;

    http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/has-anyone-tried-this-octane-booster.323258/

In post #11 I posted a link to a few octane raising recipes that are WAY more economical than buying the pre-mixed stuff. Now you can setup your new engine with 12:1 compression with good rods that will handle more RPM and you should easily be in the low 12s or even possibly high 11s N/A depending how aggressive you get with your new cam. A little tiny shot of laughing gas an your in the 11s!

Supposedly these recipes are the same ways the big oil companies use to raise pump gas octane on some of their higher premium blends.

By the way, did you get a chance to finish installing your new intake?

I got the intake all drilled out and it fits with the .032 gasket without the valley pan. I checked out AM&P for the valley pan and he needed some exact measurements of the intake. I think he wanted to know about the bottom and how much it extended. In the meantime I was reworking mine since I know that with it modified it sits on the heads on the intake port side on that lip of the heads.

Well I always knew that once the gaskets are put on over the edges of the valley pan the intake would always cut into the gaskets on the bottom. So what I had to do was make the lip on the valley pan as small as possible so there would not be much overlap with the gasket. I put the .015 gasket on there with the valley pan and it all is looking good at this time.

The lip on the valley pan that sits on the head had to be thinned down since the intake still does sit on this at the bottom. The composite gasket sits on that edge of the valley pan also and add thickness to this area. I really want to get the other pan from AM&P but I not sure if that will happen.

My work got stopped at the moment I have this damn kidney stone that started killing me Tuesday so right now I am on hold. Got a surgery scheduled for next week to laser it out if I can't spit it out by then.

TA has new valley covers that negate the need for the conventional style shields

I did see this and would rather have that probably need to drill holes in the block for that. Most likely need to have the engine out to do it since the crap from cutting drilling will get in the oil pan.

Hope you're feeling better soon, that kidney stone business is serious painful stuff!

Get better first and worry about the car afterwards, I wish you well.

Thanks Sean I had the surgery today and feel a lot better. I have a stent though from the sphincter to the kidney and it will come out in two weeks. Got some bleeding and burn when I go to bathroom.
Time to get back to the car but it looks like I will miss the Nationals at Norwalk, sorry guys did not expect this to happen. Wanted to make a showing this year but it is always something.

Anybody ever watch that show Street Outlaws, some crazy stuff there. They ALL run Turbos and Prochargers with 3 stage nitrous kits. 12-1500 hp the norm on that show. This is what I have been watching since I can't do much.

ooohhh kidney stones are NO joke...been down that path myself, and I thought I was gonna die. I've been shot point blank with a 20 gauge shotgun and had my right leg amputated above the knee as a result, so I know what pain is!
My heartfelt sympathies to you Guy. I hope you're feeling better soon.

OHHH I did not know that about you very sorry to hear about that one. I hope that was an accident, I felt like I was shot in the kidney when that pain started last week. Damn now I feel bad for giving you such a hard time about not getting a car to the track.

Sad thing on this site is we rate people on what they say or how they talk and really do not know the person behind the typewriter.
I was really trying to become a PTA and I wanted to do this to give help to other people that needed therapy but I just could not get through the Algebra. I was getting it but it was taking me too long. But the 4 years of College part time was a lot of fun and met a lot of people along the way.

I had 1 year of Algebra in high school and switched to Accounting Practices so when I had to take the Algebra 40 years later I really struggled with it. I had to eventually drop out and stay with what I knew best and am dang good at it and that was a printing pressman.

I know one thing for sure is I would not ever wish that kidney stone pain on anyone.

I didn't want to 'one up' you on the pain thing, just pointing out how I can sympathize with pain and that anyone who has never experienced kidney stones would understand that it's extremely excruciating. Some have said it's worse than childbirth. lol
Those poor women. We should give them more respect. :)
I generally have a very good attitude and sense of humor about my condition; plus it makes people more comfortable around me. :)
Nice thing about computers is you can learn stuff at your own pace. Study what you want, no matter how long it takes, then when you feel you're ready, you can take some classes and ace them.
I was always good at math and science, but didn't care much for language back when I was in grade school. Now I'm an English wizard and can speak/read/write German, and some French and Spanish.
Amazing how your tastes/interests can evolve with age.

I knew you were not trying to one up me on the pain thing. One thing about pain it just hurts like...
and you can't do much about it unless you want to take a bunch of pills or drink a lot of whiskey lol.

One thing I learned about math is everything runs off it.

I was one that hated History and now I am always interested in everything old. Fan of letterpress and moveable type, actually wish I had a Heidelberg Windmill and some type to have fun with, one of my favorite machines.

This has nothing to do with a SP3 does it? ha.

It's ok it's good to get off topic and bit and relate to each other on a personal level once in a while... I have a feeling if many of us met in person we would not be so hard on each other on here.

Everything is structured--math, language, history, etc.
They're not so uncommon/unrelated when you look at it like that.
It applies to lifeforms as well as machines, and on to molecules and all the way up to stars, planets, galaxies, etc. etc.
I too enjoy history and old things. :)
Off-topic is my specialty, Sean! lol
...although if you think about it, it really isn't all that off-topic when you see that we're still talking about the complexities of a machine (the human body), and how it can run into problems, need fixing, diagnosing, etc.
I think we'd all be surprised at how much we all have in common with each other in some way or another in various aspects of our lives. Perhaps some more than others, and could be why some gravitate toward certain people. Just like in real-world life.

Here is something to look at not related to sp3 Bought this in about 1985. can check points for open and dwell and the rpm works real good in conjunction with a vac gauge to set the carb. still works too. See that Made in USA, not anymore!
