The carb on my car has a bad metering block, we think, as the screw on the driver's side of the front block does nothing and one bank is running richer than the other. I spoke to the nice people at All American Carburetor in Orange Park, FL (near Jacksonville, so too far to drive for fun).

They told me they remanufacture, replate, and run the carb before returning it:

They said the charge would be about 250+shipping for the original Holley 4bbl on my '66 Corvette. I am tempted to do this as a new one is close to $900.00 and I don't have that lying around.

Has anyone used All American and do you have any experiences you wish to share? They seemed like they knew what they were doing, and, of course, if it is not repairable for some reason, they return it at no charge.

    Cheers,

    Richard

Mechanic says that whoever rebuilt it--it is 53 years old, so who knows?--probably tried to scrape off the older gasket instead of letting it soak over night and carefully removing any debris that was left. Says he sees it all the time. Older gaskets were bare, this stuck to the part. Newer gaskets have a coating on them that makes them easier to remove. Evidently this messes with the delicate metering block somehow--he showed me the new gasket and one that had come out of a car to explain the many delicate passages and things that must be right once the gasket is installed and tightened down to keep it running properly.

Not sure who did that; when I first drove the car last year I did not notice anything wrong, but who knows? It could have been masked or not yet failed, so I have no way of tracing the repair history. Now I am making my own record, so will know what goes on from here on out.

    Cheers,

    Richard

DEADMANSCURVE my first word : truck

bad metering block probably not , clogged passageway somewhere sure . a few gaskets and a good cleaning might do it for ya .
be sure and check your throttle blade opening/transition slot . too much slot = no idle control . but if just one side is effected maybe not that .
got a list# for that carb ? on the front of choke tower .

I do--it is a factory replacement carb, so "judged" OK by the Corvette police. Don't remember the actual numbers, but all numbers are 100% correct given that it is an authorized replacement. Good thing--I did NOT want to go to Corvette jail...

My feeling is that having it totally redone like they do it up there will fix everything. They run it on an engine before they send it back, so can't really ask for more than that for making sure throttle blade, etc., is working correctly. Fingers crossed!

    Cheers,

    Richard
