Afternoon to everyone! I am have a issue with my edelbrock 1406 with electric choke leaking around rear linkage behind the choke. I purchase this new carburetor because the old one(1406) was leaking in the same place and I called edelbrock tech line only to get a "we are gone for the holidays" and this was on Friday morning, pacific time. I know how some of the guys
feel about the edelbrock, but any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Larry This is not my setup, but this is where leak is at

so , you had your original 1406 and a new 1406 - both leaking fuel out of this same shaft end area . correct ? let me study a couple I've got - never really seen that before , especially with two in a row .
edit : checked . well the first thing that comes to mind is casting flaw , but , probably not on two carbs like that ? you could return that new carb , try another 1406 , if it checks out then you are good ta go . but if that leaks also look elsewhere . three casting flaws in the same spot - not likely .
check plugs - running rich ? look down the throat of old carb - blackish lookin ? runnin rich . check float level ( 7/16" , float drop 15/16" ) . check fuel pressure to carb - should be in the 5-6 lb range ( that is per edelbrock tech ) . if that is pushin gas through/flooding then it could possibly be building up and running down onto shaft and then out ? but I think that's a BIG maybe . if that's the case then the plugs will look bad , the car will not run well , you may even be able to smell the fuel/rich condition .
how much is leaking out ?
and do not forget to check the silly/obvious : could there be a small leak or loose fitting on your fuel inlet allowing gas to drip down onto the outer shaft ?

I know how to fix that!

Had the same problem with my 3921 AFB's - both leaked from the primary throttle shaft after shutdown. Checked everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) but never did fix it...went over to a Q-Jet an never had an issue again. The AFB wasn't really a bad carb, had great throttle response but I really dig the Q-Jets.

Thanks for the info. I cleaned up new carb today but no leak. I notice strong smell of gas after engine shut off and this one little brass jet that sits up front left of 1406 was spitting out gas , but not enough to spill over. yesterday I had a nice puddle on hot manifold, same with old 1406 carb. new carb, no black soot. well this brand new carb was bought from private seller, never mounted. So Is the gas coming out top brass jet normal?

Could it be a bad fitting? You're not using any teflon tape or anything, are you? I have used 650 nad 750 Edelbrocks without any issues and the 1406 i had had been quite dependable. Let us know how you make out!

hey Dave, thanks. Not using any tape. Started car and got it to normal temp. No Leaks but strong gas smell after engine is shut off. Could not identify where it could be coming from. Car drives great, was the leak , now raw gas smell! Help

    First step would be to-

-take a fuel pressure reading to make sure its not too high
-take carb apart and check float level to make sure its set to right height
-check or replace needle and seat

As an FYI, Ive had needle and seats that looked perfectly fine but leaked fuel past the seat.
