seems like a dumb question, but are they needed or not? While I'm redoing my top end, I figured I'd replace or remove the previous owners homemade wooden carb spacer.:puzzled:

motor is stock except for headers and exhaust...would a simple 1" spacer be best? And I'd assume a phenolic space would be the best choice becuase of the heat reduction, right?

wood is good, and its free, my spacer is made out of birdseye maple. didn't have enough room for a full 1 inch spacer so it's 3/4 been on for two years, no problems

Wood is very good for heat "block". Plastic is good and it's black so it looks cool. A 4 hole spacer is for the low end while the open design is for the upper power band. Lots of people have good success with the 1" 4 hole design. Unless you have 600hp under the hood.

People are probably getting tired of me saying this but I put a open hole 1 inch spacer on my stock nailhead (apart from a 66 Q-jet intake and 800 Q-Jet) and it increased power all across the board from down low (I need new tyres now) to the top end. I noticed the difference immediately and it put a big smile on my face. Hood clearance issues aside I'd say go for it.
