I've got a track rental day coming up on Sept 7th at Lebanon Valley in NY. I'm gonna take the 65, and I'm gonna try a bunch of Carb/Intake options back to back. Weather looks great so far - dry and 75 degrees!

I've got these components to try (in various combinations)
    66 Buick 750 CFM Q-Jet (Ruggles spec)
    73 Buick 800 CFM Q-Jet (Ruggles spec)
Holley 650 CFM 4165 (mechanical secondary)
Carter 3921 (590 CFM?) AFB (jetted and rods)
    Buick squarebore iron manifold (unmodified)
    "Doc Mod" squarebore manifold
    "Doc Mod" spreadbore manifold

I'll try as many combinations as I can after I get the best ET's out of the 66 Q-Jet and post the results. If anybody wants to come by and see, help, heckle, etc..... please feel free (just outside of Albany NY)- we've got the track from 10-3 or so, and as many runs as we want. If you'd like to see a specific combination run, let me know as I might not get to them all. Baseline on this (stock) car is 14.85 - 15.00 at 90-92 mph depending on weather. I cant count my prior G-Tech numbers as much as I'd like to (14.5!)

I havent yet been able to get together with Tom to get a set of rockers - that might be next springs project.... Better change my oil this weekend!

sounds like a lot off fun, am betting on docs mod and the 750 q-jet.

Good bet - of all the combinatins I've run, that one is dialed in and feels the strongest. I've had it up to the track twice, but had other issues that really never allowed me to wring it out. Third time's a charm, right? When we switched over from the AFB, my buddy/co-driver told me it like driving a different car, but that never showed up in the numbers or on the G-Tech. Hits like injection and makes an awesome sound though!

The 800 is really just spare parts I threw together, a 67 base and airhorn with a 73 center section. no choke parts, so the CFM may be better than 800, but it still has primary dial in issues so I dont expect much from it and havent had time to put any miles on it and tune.

But after all the chassis and exhaust work with a Q-Jet on, I'm kinda interested to get the AFB back on and see whats what. I keep forgetting that despite the leaks, etc...that carb had great throttle resonse, and might have been better in the 60 ft but not by much.

I will get it out on the table (and Doc can tell you too) - I'm a big Q-Jet fan and totally biased! If the Holley is ever gonna get a fair shake someone else will have to tune it - I only know enough to get them to stop leaking....and dont have the extra jets to match to the weather

If anyone had a big holley they'd like to lend for the day ( and you're somewhere between Albany and Hartford) I'll throw it in the mix and I won't dissapear with it (remember, I'm a Q-Jet guy)

I'm looking forward to this, and I'll take lots of pictures.

Man,,,,, I wish you had a 950 or 1050 holley 3 barrel with vac secondaries..... Dang, I wish we lived closer together.....another thing you could check out is cold air pkg. /heated manifold vs just a heated manifold.....

    Doc!

    You could fedex one up!

I think it might even work with my spreadbore manifold....there's a notch on the divider between the secondaries, not sure if it's deep enough to clear the throttle plate though... Is the 3 barrel square or spread?

The cold air pkg thing is always appealing, it's just a matter of not wanting to hack holes in the cowl or inner fenders, at least not now. I did have a close look at a W-30 the other day, and I can see how mounting the battery North/South could give me the clearance to run duct to under-the-bumper scoops. But I really love the look of that big, stupid chrome pancake air cleaner. Especially since it's been "doc modded" by removing the inner snorkel baffle.

I'm eagerly awaiting the results!! Wish I was closer.....we could swap carbs and test on 2 cars! I've been wanting to test more combos as well.

I put a cold air setup on my blue car. Using the outer headlight openings, I made a funnel shaped adapter. The small end fit snugly into the openings in the rad support behind the headlights. The large end was sized to accept the stainless ring that formerly held the light bulb to the bucket. 'Gutter guard' mesh covers the opening......you can somewhat see it in my avitar. Emissions ducting connects to the snorkels on the factory 2x4 air cleaner.

I recall Doc ducted his air cleaner to the wiper motor opening on the cowl (Riv?). I always liked that idea.:TU:

    Good luck with the testing!

    Yep,,,,,
And,,, the last time I fedexed a carb , all the guy got was a empty box.... and I had to pay him for the carb after rebuilding it..... dont think I will ship one at all.....

It's just as well, I'd never have given that carb a fair shake anyway....I mean, who runs a three barrel when you can run four? Kinda like a three legged dog!

So I'll let you know how my "low speed testing" efforts go, although I'm hoping for big things from my shiny new mandrel bent 2.5 system. I'm realizing there's no more "cheap speed" left in this car. I'd take all the undercoat and seam sealer out like Doc suggests, but thats all thats holding it together!

Walt, heres another ram air on my 340.the hood stops are holding the vents down. Doc, no other changes pick up 2.5 tenths like you always say good for 2-3 tenths

Seriously,,,,,:Brow: Rhett,,,,, i think that you are overlooking a bunch of cheap, power by not having a cold air intake set up......
buick says that it is worth 8% of the total output of the engine.... that will be 30 some horses and then some.....:Brow: that will be some tenths ,,,, if nothing else just fasten a drier duct hose to the snorkle and wire tie it to the under side of the core support behind the front bumper and make a run to see what it does.....i could tell the difference with my car..... naturally it works better with either a double snorkel set up or one bigger one....

    Here's a grin for Doc - :)

And that last one is a set up I can get behind! - no modifications to the sheetmetal - What application did the scoops above the support come from?

All that aside, I'll pick up some dryer duct hose this morning.....

    Nice setup!:TU:
And I like those Offy valve covers!

BTW, Rhett, the stock single-snorkle air cleaner on my car killed performance. It wouldn't breath at higher rpm's.

Walt - I was concerned about the single snorkle too, but more because I thought the space between the bottom of the lid and the radius of the base where it came over the carb was way too tight.

What I did was put a ring of fuel hose in the air cleaner base in the channel where the filter sits. Now the filter and lid sit about 1/2 an inch above the housing, and there is an 1/2 open space all the way around where the filter would normally seal. I figure thats got to ease up any flow restrictions too. Kinda like the grown up version of flipping the air cleaner lid (for that boss sound!.......)

I did buy some aluminum dryer ducting yesterday, and I was able to run it over the alternator, down along side the radiator and out the bottom next to to the drag link. At that point I can give it a 90 degree bend under the support for that "Ram Air" effect! It's an embarrasing looking set up, but if I take the hose out and drop the filter flush, it'll be all cold air. I'll try various combinations and hope nobody I know sees me.

And Doc, I even dropped in some ZDDP.

And for all this, maybe It''ll run 14.6 at 95? I just hope I dont run accros GSGTX, who is running that same ET at 100 mph with a kinda stock 340 and 2.78 gears.. I'd better get on the phone to Telasco and get me some rockers!

    Hey Rhett

I have a Holley 850dp you could try out if you wanted. its got a dual feed AN fuel line on it not sure if that helps you? I also have a spread/square bore adapter if youd need.

Hey good morning! Thats a great offer and thanks!

I can try that, I just have to figure out how to run a rubber line to it. I have an extra inlet nipple from an AFB, or maybe a piece of line with 1/2 flare for a barb, I've got line, but not the matching fitting.

I do have square bore intake that'll be going on at some point, so I should be good there. I've also got studs and I'll see if I can dig up a new base gasket (right now the AFB runs against the metal heat shield, but the crossover heat is blocked at the carb pad so I wont cook your carb)

I'll give you a call, I can probably run up some day this week during lunch. But aside form that, what are YOU doing friday? Is your Olds broke in yet?

I should mention that Ken built my 750 Q-Jet, and it's the best running carb of the bunch. The main focus of the whole trip is to see what that carb will do without all the things that got in the way the last 3 times I went up to run it (40 mph headwind, ice cold track/0 traction and fuel delivery problems)
