I installed my Crower Level 3 at 0* according to the timing chain (pictured), but it has (or should have) 4* of advance in it. So, if I wanted to retard the cam so it's at -4*, would it need to read -8* on the timing set? If so, I think I'd need the 9 way adjustable set...yes?
Don’t count on it being advance 4. Put it at 4 retard should be 4 retard or 116. But the only way to know is to degree it But personally I say leave it at 0 unless you bumped compression over the stock piston 9.2-9.4
The Crower cam Chis has was 4 advanced at straight up and the 4 degree crank retard key was zero advance.
I believe Andy is just saying that if you didn't actually degree the cam in you can only hope it is installed at straight up. The Crower cam is supposed to have +4 advance built so you'll be ok, probably. Generally speaking you want a cam installed a few degrees advanced to make up for chain stretch as the miles pile up. An advanced cam in most combinations is better than a retarded cam and that is why most cam manufacturers add the 4 degrees advance in. The good news is you have what looks like a standard +/-4* chain set which usually are close to "normal" while if you had the billet +/-8* set your cam timing would be much more of a crap shoot. The only way to install a billet set is if you are going to degree it. As suggested leave it alone.
Concider the fact that a chain like that will give up 2 degrees within 3000 miles, or the first ten 5000 rpm full throttle punches on the street or the track!
Thanks for the input. The motor is already together, that pic was from around last thanksgiving. It runs damn fine, was just wondering for future projects. I saw a magnetic degree wheel, I think on of of them motortrend shows, or on the PowerNation shows... either way. anyone ever use one? It sticks to the balancer. Or should I just go with the tried and true wheel?
