I`m installing a TA 284-88H in my 400 and my cam card reads as follows ,
    c/L 110
exhaust opens 45 closes at 5
    intake open 1.5 closes @ 41.5
    intake duration 223
    over lap 6.5

    1.5+41.5+180=223
223/2-1.5=110 shouldn't it be 106? it`s says to degree the cam in at 106.
I degreed the cam in with a 9 keyway chain set and closes as I could get is +4 on the bottom gear,
    atdc 1.5+26+180=207.5
    207.5/2=103.75+1.5=105.75
intake duration 207.5 is a long way from 235 and 26 is long way from 41.5.
max lift calls for 295 I get 291.
    would you guys run this?

I always use the max lift method to degree cams. I'd try that first. How is your dial indicator set up?

    hi rob
I have it set on the outer edge of the lifter.

Are you sure it's perpendicular to the top of the lifter and parallel to push rod travel. I've seen the duration be off up to one degree but not as you describe. Try the max lift method and let me know your findings.

If you're using a Rollmaster timing set, remember they don't have the 4 degrees advance built into it like a stock one. It confuses the issue by 4 degrees.

    So I'm looking for 110? Not 106?

No,he is saying that you will have to use the 4 degree advance keyway to get the cam to where it needs to be.GL

Search "TDC and cam degreeing headaches" and maybe that thread will help.

    Ok that's what I did. And got a c/ l of 105.75

If you did everything right, then within 1/4 of a degree is as good as it gets and would be way close enough.

yes I think 105.75 is great for the center line but 26 for the intake when the cam card call for 41.5
and intake duration cam card call for 223 I get 207.5

Check the timing and lift on the exhaust lobe just to verify all the cam specs.

I'm assuming you are always turning the crank clockwise to take your readings and you are checking it at .050" lobe lift.

yes I`m checking @.050 lift clockwise and not going passed the 50 mark.
look at the cam card and do the math (see my first post) what`s on the card comes out to 110 C/L .what`s up with that ?
When I feel better I check exhaust . I know that the max lift on the exhaust is right on the money 295* and where it open`s was 45* but where it closes was way off

A lot of times the cam cards show the opening and closing points for the cam at zero advance and then they tell you where to put the lobe centers for the particular application.
    Yes, It can be confusing.

The exhaust should open at 49* if the lobe center is at 114* BTDC.
I know you are set up ok because you are getting good max lift readings.
    This is a real puzzle!

After you finish double checking the lobes for cylinder #1, I would move the dial indicator and check #6 and see if you get the same result.

right now i have cl/l of 110. Do you think the degree wheel could be the problem ? It's a 7 inch just seems small to me

Draw two lines perpendicular and check the wheel against it.

Find a piece of paper that is larger than your degree wheel. Maybe a lid from a pizza box, draw a line with a ruler from top to bottom in roughly the middle. Now a horizontal line that is 90 degrees to the vertical line. Check it with a square. Now you have a cross that you line up and compare it to your degree wheel. You can check 4 locations at once, rotate a degree, check 4 more etc... Make sense?

In your first post you indicated that the CL/I was at 105.75*. Did you move it?

A 7" wheel will get you close enough since the timing gear set will only let you move timing in 2 degree increments.
