    All:

I am deciding between degreeing kits from Jegs. One is marketed by Comp Cams and the other is brand X I suppose. There is a $40.00 premium for the CC version.

The descriptions are identical. Has anyone ordered either of these items. If so, what did you think about them?

    Thanks:)

David, the brand X is probably ProForm for just under 90 bucks. The Comp Cams kit comes with a videotape. I use the Proform (brand X) and it works fine. The dial-indicator is not the best quality but good enough. The dial indicator stand screws right into the valve cover bolthole and the indicator uses the valve retainer for the reading. The rocker assembly must also be installed on the head for number 1 cylinder. I needed to get a solid lifter and rig up a way to hold the degree wheel with the crank nut and still have it centered since the hole is too large. I have never used the light springs that come with the kit.

If you already have (or want to buy cheap) a dial indicator and stand (try Harbor Freight) then all you need are a degree wheel (sold separately), solid lifter (not included in kit), piston stop (can be made from old spark plug or ordered separately) and a coat hanger (to make pointer out of). All for less than 50 bucks.

Most cams I have check go in straight up (line up dots) but once in a while one needs to be moved (advanced or retarded) to match the cam card. Some racers also like to change the cam from the original intended Intake Centerline.

    Thanks Mike

Thanks for your reply Mike. I had planned to buy the dial indicator/stand @ Harbour Frt. However, I received a Jegs GC for X-mas so I got to thinking.

Does the dial indicator stand come with a magnetic base?

If not, I'll go with HF's version. The last time I looked, they were 2-fer-a-nickle or so.

Is a 9" wheel a good size degree wheel? They has some bigger and some smaller.:Do No:

The ProForm kit does not use a magnetic base only 1/4" threads. The nine inch wheel has worked fine for me and I mount the pointer to the side of the head.

The timing set can only be so accurate and once the chain stretches...
