I just pulled the carb off the 71 455 I bought not long ago. The numbers are 7041540 MF 0771 I believe this is a California carb The questions are, is this worth rebuilding? What is the difference between a California and the rest of the carbs When I took it off, there were 2 metel screens that looked like acorns that went into the intake, what was their purpose? Will it run better with a non Cali carb Thanks for any help, john
The book I have (Guide to Buick GS by Steven Dove) shows it as a 71 455 carb for auto trans. There is no reference to it being a California carb.
Correct, it isn't the California carb. It is the 71 Buick 455 Quadrajet and is a great carb to build. It is 800 cfm. As far as the metal screens, that was probably an old gasket piece that was sold as a horsepower gain, or fuel economy, or whatever. It can be tossed away.
Thats great to know ill post pics of the metal screens later. Meybe it was a "vornado" from the 70's lolol. Thank you very much eveyone
could you post some more pictures of the screen, I've never seen that before, could help atomization or not, very cool
Does anyone know why Rochester switched from the 240 build configuration to the 540 for that one year only? It's like they subbed a traditionally CA carb for the entire country that year. Something to do with the strike? Has anyone ever seen a 7041240?
They used 1242 for stage 1, 1243 for 455 manual and 1245 for 350 manual in 71. All others were 1540, 1544. There wasn’t any 1240 or 1244’s produced according to my records.
I'll try to post them tonight . I thought I read that the 5 in the code meant Cali carb and the then I took it off and saw the screens, I thought it was part of the cali carb . Wrong both times
that's the first time ive seen the primary screens like that. Ive seen other gaskets with different versions of that idea, but not that exact one.
